Dial-up at 24-33.6kb/s? Are you sure? That's kind of fast considering that I get about that download rate with MTN EDGE!

You not confusing your kilobits with kiloBytes maybe?

MTN EDGE speed is pretty much dependant on distance from tower, reception quality etc. Although I must say your speed sounds slow.

Btw, is there some way to enchance my 3g signal? I seem to be just out of coverage. . . about 4-6km.
 
You solution is here http://bordelon.net/codec.html. Implements digital radio for wavelet compression to stream a wavelet or JPEG images for UAVs. But can also be used to send TCP/IP as well. Ues the 434Mhz ham radio license free band that can do 100km with a Yagi and omni. With two Yagi's on either side you should get at least 200km at 5watts. The important thing is not be overawhd or mystified by the technology, there is nothing complicated or difficult about sending 50Meg (at 300Mhz) a distance of 300km using Flash OFDM and two Yagi's from your rooftop in Pretoria all the way to Jhb and beyond.

Have you tried to build any of your wild ideas yourself yet?... or are you still waiting for someone else to do the leg work for you and then pretend that you were the genius behind it.

Also, aren't you overcomplicating the whole thing with UAVs just so someone can get an Internet connection. I mean hell.. who will keep them fueled etc etc etc

Callabria : why not contact some of the WISPs in your area... they may be able to setup a long distance wifi link for you and the surrounding farms.
 
Because you are in a low user density region Wimax on 300Mhz is ideal. To align the two parabolics over a 100km distance LOS, hoist yourself up in an Air balloon about in the middle of the two links to get a good geo lock.
You see we could have bandwidth for everybody by using 300 - 800Mhz for very long range links and 900 - 6ghz for shorter higher density user base. Thus the entire wireless spectrum is used. But of course there would be interference. So be it, and the solution to high density users causing interference say in a Sandton suburb is to connect as many houses as possible with FSO. Combine FSO and the entire spectrum. Low density users in rural towns would use 425Mhz for example etc. Note that spectrum "scarcity" is a function of user density. In the Sahara dessert , it would be irrational to use 2.4ghz due to Fresnel zone issue, rather use 300Mhz. In the CBD of Jhb one would first bridge each building -to-building using FSO and a layer-3 switch with fiber connecting the FSO nodes on either building.. From each FSO node install a Wi-Fi circuit. While in the Karoo install everybody on 300Mhz and get done with it .

Icasa would of course protest if we were to all just start using the entire spectrum. But as spectrum interference issues present themselves FSO would resolve it.
