Internet Connection Optimisers

Is there any benefit to be derived from using one of the many internet connection optimisers available on the net such as one found at http://www.optimizingpc.com/install/internetconnection.html
Woill these optimisers improve my 512 connection.....?? Thanks

In my experience (and from what I've gathered from reading a lot of techie forums), you should generally stay away from internet "optimizers". At best, they will only tweak a few settings you could easily alter yourself and which don't make any difference. At worst, they will kill your wife, rape your dog and burn down your house. Or install spyware and eat up your system resources and bandwidth - whichever is worse to you.

Some of them will try to make web pages load faster by opening "multiple connections" to them. Some web sites are actively banning acces from these things, and since you are on ADSL, page load times should not be an issue.

Short answer: No.

Thanks, pretty what much I suspected but it's good to have confirmation. Tempting sometimes though, isn't it ??!!!

If you get Firefox, the Fasterfox plugin will give you most of the functionality you might need to speed up browsing

Indeed!

Also, have a look at the FasterFox website FAQ before you install it, especially the part about pre-fetching: http://fasterfox.mozdev.org/faq.html
Installing Firefox, however, is a smashing idea - I only use IE for netbanking nowadays. Take away my tabbed browsing, will you? Over my dead body!

Cheers !! I use Netcaptor and very happy with it - as you say, it's difficult browsing without tabs once you get used to them

Yep

And if you use Standard Bank, FF works brill

well if you had adsl your line can only go so fast due to telkom so no program will help

but with dial up it helps a kuk load trust me

doesnt work with isdn either

To speed up Firefox even more, download the extensions Adblock Plus and Adblock.Filterset.G Updater.

You would not believe how the ads on sites like www.news24.co.za slows down your browsing. And it is much easier on the eyes without the ads.

Agreed. I'm busy getting everyone at work to use it! :D
