Hi all,

I would like to find out if anyone knows of a decent program to share an inet connection from one xp machine to another where both machines are set to dynamic (DHCP) ips? Can't use windows ICS cause ips must stay dynamic as pcs jump between different networks.

Thanks...

windows is so inferior when it comes to acting as a server ... get yourself an old machine, and setup some linux distro with iptables, dns and dhcp server ... all your problems will be solved in a blink of an eye :)

or you can just buy router though ... it will be even easier

Hmm. Thanks for reply. I have a server running already on the network but all i'm looking for is a stand-alone prog that can route access to inet to a certain ip.

Take it you're regretting purchasing the USB modem?

Are you sure you cant use ICS? I used to use it with a pots modem and that ip was dynamically assigned just as yours would be with adsl. Its a different network adaptor from your ethernet card after all.

yes but as far as I know the extreme stupid ICS changes your IP to a static one once you enable it ... so he doesn't want that as far as I understand, and who would

well, I am not aware of such program ... you can always use proxy but it is a pain in the arse!

I love windows for desktop, but I can't stand it for server, so I am not aware of all the hacks to make it work, but certainly somebody else here could help you ...

Ok guys, sorry i didn't say what type of broadband i'm using. It's 3g datacard on my laptop that plugs into the network at work and uses internet at work and then at home plugs into home network and i want my desktop (gaming) to use 3g connection. Got a win2003 server on home network and really don't feel like setting up routing and remote access and nat. Thats why i want to leave the ip on the lan on the laptop to dchp so i dont have to change it whenever i switch to a different network. So what i'm really looking for is a small nat program to do the job.

EDIT: Yes swordfish thats exactly right. If you enable stoopid ICS than it changes ip to 192.168.0.1 and we using a totally different range and subnet.

hmm if your modem plugs into the NIC, I will suggest you consider buying a broadband router. this way you are always connected on any machine connected to the router.

you just plug the modem into the router internet NIC port and there you go. If you get tomorrow ADSL, you just plug the ADSL modem into the router and everything else remains the same

good idea but also looking for a cheaper solution. :D

I know im asking alot but there must be something out there. I'll keep looking.....

it cost about R500-600 max ... I bought mine which includes wireless access point for R650. well, hope you find a software solution, but if you don't, you can always buy a router :)
