internet connection sharing

I need some help regarding sharing my iburst connection between 2 pc's.:confused:
i have an iburst usb modem. 2 pcs running windows xp (home and pro). and a four port network hub. computers are coonected to the hub via cat5e ethernet cables.
any help would greatly be appreciated.

I see no-one responded to your post yet, so I may not be the best resource. I had the same issue tho.

When both pc's connect via LAN cable you cannot run ICS I know that for a fact (the WHY i'll leave to the experts to explain). There doesn't seem to be a way around it.

What you can do is though is to connect on pc via USB, connect and then share that with ICS. But this means once your iburst is connected and you switch of that pc, your other pc do not have connectivity anymore. the iburst modem in itself cannot act as a router and connect itself, nor can you connect two pc's with the normal PPPOE simultaneously.

Your answer and probably your best option is to get a router. These routers most of them have multiple LAN ports as well. Then you connect your modem to the router via LAN, your pc's to the router via LAN and run your router web-interface on any of the pc's IE to set up your connection router level. (wow, hope that makes sense)

There are a number of routers ppl can probably suggest. I didn't wanna go to expensive and bought a Netgear 108 mbps wireless router (I got one laptop that now connects wirelessly and one pc via LAN cable) for about R800 or so. Model name WGT624. As I say, it may not be the best or anything, but it works for me right now. If I recall correctly, there are cheaper routers that doesn't offer the wireless lan (also Netgear) and goes for about R400 -R600.

You can run connect iBurst using ICS with a lan cable, that is....if you have 2 or more network cards like me, though I'd say for the excessive lancardless the router option would be the bestestest.
 
For ICS It does not matter how your PC's are connected, as long as they can talk with each other, ie you can see it in your network places. The issue with two PC's connected via an ethernet cable 10-1 have more to do with whether it was a crossover cable or not.

Simplistically, on the PC with the iburst modem, you have to share that connection with ICS, IOW enable sharing in the properties of the connection for the modem.

There are other issues such as DHCP, but I have found some very good step by step guides by googling many years ago when I did this. At the moment I do not use ICS. In fact I think that if you google this site for ICS you may also find the answers here.
 
Server :
1. Make sure your real network card has "obtain ip automatically" under TCP/IP
2. Enable ICS on your PPPOE connection aka iBurst aka Broaband connection
3. When this is enabled your Real Network card will change its IP to 192.168.0.1.If you want you can change it to 172.16.10.? or 10.0.0.?
4. Go to your Network Card TCP/IPs settings to confirm its changed

Workstation :

1. Obtain IP , dns ,etc automatically (ie DHCP)
2. If that doesnt work enter the following

ip - 192.168.0.2
subnet mask - 255.255.255.0
default gateway - 192.168.0.1
Pri DNS - 192.168.0.1

Dont worry about the "limited or no connectivity" problem.Thats on the Virtual network card.Its got no bearing on your connection whatsoever.The reason why it appears is because your Virtual NIC is trying to contact a DHCP server and cannot.

Does the second PC have smtp.iburst.co.za set as its SMTP server setting? Iburst will not let you relay out through anyone else.
 
i have iburst with mweb. my servers are therefore "smtp.tiscali.co.za" and "pop.tiscali.co.za". bear in mind that i can send and receive e-mails from the "server" or "gateway" computer.
