Internet connections gone?

I rebooted my machine today and once back in I found that neither my international nor local desktop net connection shortcuts would work. I mean, they won't even open up for me to input login details. When I go to route sentry the "connection to use" inputs are empty.

Going to network connections the only thing there is my LAN, which is fine. When I try adding a new connection to the internet with the wizard the "connect using dial up modem" and (what I would normally pick) "connect using a broadband connection that requires user name and pass" are both greyed out.

I haven't made any changes to my system recently and I have never experienced this before. My skill level is very average so I'm totally stumped as to what has gone wrong. Help!

PS - Writing this using my dad's laptop. It's the same router and account so everything is fine on that end.

it could be the network card is either dead or slightly loose ...... try take it out and reinsert?

eish, I had an OB one fizzle on me before ....... what happens when you go into Device Manager? IS your network connection still there?

What am I looking for exactly? There is a Marvell Yukon under network adapters. No errors anywhere in Device Manager.

well if it had frizzled, it wouldn't be showing in there AFAIK ........ hmm ....... all I could suggest is either 1) wait for the more experienced guys here to answer or 2) buy a network card :o Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

Maybe try uninstalling the adapter driver from System Manager (Control Panel->System->Hardware->Device Manager) and let Windows pick it up again after reboot - happened to me on a Gigabyte onbard LAN connector - I think it happened after a Microsoft update...

Just make sure that you know your LAN settings (if applicable)...go into the settings and write them all down, or take screen dumps and save them to the desktop, or folder :)

Ok, tried to uninstall my gigabit ethernet controller. Only the "confirm device removal" window froze when I hit OK. Eventually had to turn the power off manually, then it jumped into a system check which took awhile and did a number of file corrections. Got back into windows and tried again aaaaand...I'm currently still looking at the freaking confirm device removal window after hitting ok 5 minutes ago.

Have a try at going to your Network Connections in Control Panel, and right-clicking on the gigabit connection and choose repair?

Try booting into Safe Mode and remove the driver (unplug the LAN cable first) -- to get to Safe Mode, press and tap F8 every second or so, after you hear the first POST beep...when presented with the menu, select "Safe Mode".

It could be that your onboard LAN hardware is knackered, which could explain why it keeps freezing...

If you're unable to remove in this mode, then try through your Network Connections (disable) - otherwise, I don't know... maybe search your installed programs to see if there is any software installed for your LAN adapter - try removing it.

BTW - what motherboard do you have?

In safe mode there were a lot more items under network adapter like "direct parallel" and "wan miniport". I just uninstalled the actual network adapter and this time there was no problem with that step.

Unfortunately that didn't have any effect.

Could it maybe be something like my PPOE settings being wrong? The connection to the router looks perfect, its just that it won't let me even attempt to create a net connection.

I got an old network card from a friend but windows isn't automatically installing it and I don't know anything about the card, so I don't know where to go to find the drivers.

Sigh.

Board is GA-965P-S3

and what do you mean 'windows isn't installing the card'? control panel>add new hardware?

It wants to find drivers (the old wanna connect to the net or insert cd prompt). So it installs but isn't working properly. Its under "other devices" and listed as "ethernet controller" with that yellow exclamation on it.

If its the network adapter, is there any way to test it for certain?

sounds like that network card is dodge too ...... unless it's purely a drivers thing. I dunno if there's a way to test it for certain unfortunately. Eish, you aint having much luck bru :o

I don't mind plonking down some cash for a new card tomorrow but I need to be at least reasonably sure thats whats wrong.

Okay, now this is odd. I seem to have SOME kind of connection. Can't go to the dial up for my accounts but I just opened trillian to get some work info from a conversation history and lo and behold, it's partially connected and I'm chatting to people. MSN won't connect at all and I can't browse anything. I don't even have the connection to the net icon in the tray...

Sonofa...

Anyone know of a good house call repair guy in the CT area?

I did a google search, focusing on the greying out of options in the new connection wizard. I found this advice

"Go to: CONTROL PANEL--->ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS--->SERVICES

SET "Remote Access Connection Manager" to "MANUAL" or "AUTOMATIC"
If the service is unable to be started then you will need to reboot.

The greying out of the "Connect using a dial-up modem" and "Connect using a broadband connection that requires a username and password" is a 100% reproducible phenomenon, ie: turn off/stop the "Remote Access Connection Manager" service and your top two connection options will be greyed out. Turn it back on and you're all go!

F**k M$ and their so-called "help" at article support.microsoft.com/kb/320558"

So I tried that but I got the message "specified module could not be found". Could it be that a dll or something got damaged and this service is now buggered and thats causing the problem? I tried a system restore to yesterdays settings but I hadn't rebooted in about a week so maybe I should go back even further?

hmmm .... there is something here on the forum about a recentish MS update that messed with a lot of internet connections ..... have you updated recently because that's more than likely the problem.
