Internet for the Elderly? Advice?

Do they have a telkom prepaid line? You can't place adsl on a prepaid line :( @OP, the main factor why Internet in SA is so complicated is because of the need of Telkom to provide the facilities to connect. If there were other last mile providers, the interwebz will be much easier :) Also, I know you have already ruled out wireless, but why don't you take a look at a mobile solution. Again, I would have to recommend Afrihost Mobile - but make sure the area has good MTN signal before buying any devices.

Btw, Merry Christmas everyone :)

That's my error. They probably have a postpaid line but the OP will know best. You're right, they will have to change to post paid if they're on prepaid.

Merry Christmas to you too.

Yes, you are quite right. One old (87 years) fellow called me to say he had emails to say he had won all these competitions. I told him to delete the lot without viewing them. But he could not and fell for it. After cleaning up the mess, I told him I would disconnect the system if he did it again. I think that fixed it
My Dad, 91 years old, & now living in the UK, has a BT Internet 8 Mbps connection, which he subscribed to and set up himself, albeit with a bit of help via Skype from me in SA while still using his steam-driven desktop. He has now bought himself a HP laptop, with Win 8.0 installed, and each day he becomes more knowledgeable & comfortable with using his set-up. I help him out less and less now. I have just been on a skype call with him a few minutes ago. He will now update his Win 8.0 to 8.1, and I'm pretty confident he will be able to do that himself. I'm very proud of him :D

Thank you for the offer chrisc4290, really, but I'm not comfortable with arranging such a visit, even with your online Reputation :)

We have shown them all the types of E-mails that go around, and the Help & Support will continue, from this side. They had heard the stories before-hand, as well - "Russians want to meet with YOU," "Your Uncle has left you $xxxxxxx.xx - give us your details" and etc :P

Well, thank you all very much for your help - Much appreciated. I am torn between Afrihost and Telkom's bundles... Basically the same price, but Afrihost do seem to have some great Customer Support - I will let them weigh up their options and guide them through it, now I know what companies are trusted and the sorts of packages they offer.

Wish you all the best, and a Great New Year!!
Thank you, again :)

OP doesn't want mobile but that is the route I would go given his comment on the R600pm being pricey die a daily FB and Skype (seems Internet TV has fallen away).

Before getting ADSL, I used the 8ta 60+60 package. At R1800 for the 120Gb it is tough to beat price wise. Bough a router separately die around R500 to make a hotspot and it worked well even for world of Warcraft gaming.
