Moving to the UK soon so I'm currently browsing cellphone contracts. Many of their plans have unlimited data, so as a South African, the first thing I do is hunt for those dreaded terms/fair use policies.

And had the joy of reading the following;

All-you-can-eat data.
If you have All-you-can-eat data units as part of your package or with an Add-on, there are no hidden ‘fair use policies’ within the UK. If you’re in a Feel At Home destination, you can use up to 25,600 data units (which converts into 25 GB of data as 1 data unit converts automatically on use into 1MB of data) each month. All-you-can-eat data units should give you all the access to the internet you would normally need, without worrying about hefty bills. It’s worth noting that even if you used your phone for every minute of every day you’d only use, subject to TrafficSense™, around 1,000 GB each month. That’s why we’ve set a usage cap at 1,000 GB, in order to identify commercial use of the service, for example, which is not permitted under the Terms for Three Services.

A US service provider is offering $50 for unlimited internet, calls and text and the new iphone 6. Dont know the fair usage policy
 
No need to get a contract. The Pay as you go offerings on networks like 3 are excellent so no point in getting stuck in a long contract.
 
Kids download movies and whole series just about every night. Jersey Channel Islands

If you have a UK address that you can use, you can order a SIM before you get there.

You'll enjoy the UK with it's taste free meat and bland food! I'm a happy ex-pat living in SA... :)

On the plus side, every town has a Chinese and/or Indian Take away...
 
I use 3 and am happy, especially with the roaming in the USA.

As far as I know, only 3 and T-mobile (now part of EE) offer uncapped accounts. Giffgaff (Suck donkey balls) claims to offer unlimited data, but they don't. 3 offers 4G free of charge, but T-mobile is only 3G. You need a capped account on EE if you want 4G.

The networks will not give you a contact if you don't have a credit history in the UK. If that is the case, then you will need to go with PAYG. I would however suggest that in any case as the biggest factor when choosing a network in the UK is not price or T&C, but signal. Most people end up on the network that has the best signal at home and or the office. 3 does have software for you phone that allows calls via WIFI if you have poor signal at home or the office. Only problem is it does not use your native dialler or messaging software and that can have some consequences.

Which city will you be staying it?

A bank account is a must to start you credit history, Remember to brink your latest ZA bank statements and proof of you ZA address with as it will help you open a new account this side. A credit card helps loads, but you will only get one with a low limit with proof of address a few months after you arrive. If you want info on how to build it then shout.
