Hi

I have a client who wants to start managing his internet connection in a house he rents out to students. Currently he just has an adsl router and it's free for all which has been working fine until lately someone is sucking all the bandwidth and data.

So basically he wants to be able to issue each boarder roughly 9 people with a unique code / username and set a monthly limit for them. Ideally that unique code / username should last for the whole period that the broader is boarding and not have to be reissued every week.

Would something let this work?

Pfsense should be able to do this with captive portal :)

I will straight for the Mikrotik due to this is pretty much a Hotspot setup and there are countless guides on the Internet using a Mikrotik.

If you don't want to spend the money ie if your as frugal as I am then pfsense would be able to do it as well but I have never done it with pfsense myself I am just aware that it does have a Hotspot functionality.

How complex can this be? I can give you a solution, but it is extremely complex, expensive and will take quiet a bit of time to set up...

SOLD..!!! :D
Well, from the description, the owner of the house rents out to students. So in essence it's a business. Might just as well do it properly from the start, and keep admin to a minimum.

thanks for the input everyone.

Yes I am looking for a solution that involves the least amount of admin once it has been setup. I am not familiar with the pfsense at all. Do you have to have a computer running it or does it come loaded on a router?

Would the mikrotik be able to do it all in one?

apparently this model can do the same:

What is your budget? There are options for PFsense which doesn't include a computer running 24/7.

The client isn't too worried just as long as the solution does what it needs to do from the start. So if the best option is the MikroTik hAP (RouterBoard 951Ui-2nD) at R700 odd great but if the best solution is R2000 it shouldnt be a problem.

He just wants it to be setup and then to work. I also wouldnt have to perform maintenance on it all the time.

Ok so additional research and it appears thats it either pc running pfsense or MikroTik RouterBoard 951Ui-2HnD or MikroTik RouterBoard 951G-2HnD

But now I have been informed that you need a masters degree when setting up the mikrotik as it is very difficult to do. Is this true>?

edit: oops double post

No, Mikrotik is easy to work with once you've done it for a few years. Would highly recommend rather using the Mikrotik as a PPPOE server, and then giving every user a username and password. Track usage, and once usage has been reached, throttle their speed. Client side, give every user a HAP lite, and use that to authenticate to the PPPOE server, and give every user their own WiFi AP. Don't allow them to log into the Mikrotik's. Break out from the 951G to the Internet. Will also allow you to throttle on a per user basis. Should also be more efficient than asking for a username and password every time the user wants to use the Internet.

Just use a single Mikrotik, add QoS, solves most speed balancing issues(if you don't hard throttle each connection). Then add auth if you need per user.

So for a first time user of this brand am I looking at an impossible implementation without outside help? Also now the solution seems to be very heavy cost wise: 951G + (HAP Lites x 9)

Does the Mikrotik do authentication per users natively? For example I use cyberoam at work. I can add x users and each user can have different policies applied to it. Can the Mikrotik do the same?

Mikrotik vs Cyberoam, two different products altogether, can't compare the two. One is a basic router/firewall and other a business UTM / NGFW

Yeah I understand that they are in different realms. Was trying to find out if Mitrotik had that function to
create users in its RouterOS and set that users limit to x GB.

edit: looks like it has some sort of user management

Hotspot also supports authentication against standard RADIUS servers and MikroTik’s own User Manager which will give you a centralized management of all users in your networks.

double edit: looks like I can play with the routerOS
http://demo.mt.lv/webfig/

triple edit:
So I have had a chance to visit the site.*Its a very big house with 8 tenants. These tenants are traditional tenants which pay rent.So ideally the best setup I think would be the followingOption AMikrotek routerboard connected to 8 HAPlite creating a separate wifi for each tenant. This would allow for the least amount of admin so once it is setup it should just work and then bandwidth management can be done per wifi ap.Option BUnifi route with Unifi AP in each room.
