Hey Guys and girls,

I need any assistance or suggestions any one can give please please please,

This morning when I arrived at the office my Internet was working perfectly, I went to a meeting and when I returned DOOMED. It is no longer working.

Set up:
ADSL 1Gig line from Telkom through a telkom 5102G Modem
Service Provider: Mweb
3 PC small office network

Of the 3 PC's connected to the network only 1 can surf the net, only 2 PC's are able to connect and browse the LAN and one cant surf or browse the LAN.

When I ping from the PC able to surf the net I can ping and see the Default Gateways IP address but none of the other PC's IP addresses.

When I ping from the other 2 PC's not able to surf the net I can not ping and see the Default Gateways IP address or any of the other PC's IP addresses.

I have done the usual LAN repair stuff ie:...
Disconnect the modem leave for 20sec reconnect etc...
Same with the Switch
remove and reinstall all clients / services / protocols on the properties of the LAN and still nothing.

Lights on / flashing / off on the ADSL Modem:
PWR : On
SYS : On
WLAN : Flashing
LAN 1 : Off
LAN 2 : Off
LAN 3 : On
LAN 4 : Off
ADSL : Interval Flash
PPP : ON

Lights on / flashing / off on the 8 Port Switch With 3 network cables:
PWR : On
Port 1 : Off (no cable connected)
Port 2 : On (Cable Connected)
Port 3 : Off (no cable connected)
Port 4 : On (Cable Connected)
Port 5 : Off (no cable connected)
Port 6 : Off (Cable Connected)
Port 7 : Off (no cable connected)
Port 8 : Off (no cable connected)

I hope I have what I have mentioned above will assist in giving me some suggestions on what i may be going wrong.

Sounds like possible a DHCP issue.

Do you get an ip address from the router? or is it static.

The router is not handing out IP Addresses to the other pc's for some reason.
This is called DHCP.

To confirm my suspicion, on any of the machines that are not connecting, open a command prompt and type in:
ipconfig

If my suspicions are correct, no IP Information will be returned.

To fix:
- Get onto the router's configuration facility and check if DHCP is enabled.
or
- If you do not know how to do this, goto the machine that is working, determine it's ip address, and then set next machine's ip address to that ip address + 1 and then the next machine's ip address to +1 on the previous machine. Set the subnet masks to the same as the working machine, as well as the default gateway.

e.g.
If working machine is 192.168.0.100, 255.255.255.0, 192.168.0.2
Then, machine 1 should be 192.168.0.101, 255.255.255.0, 192.168.0.2
and, machine 2 should be 192.168.0.1021, 255.255.255.0, 192.168.0.2

Ok?

check for an APPIPA address if your machine is configured to get an address automatically and it doesn't find a DHCP server it will assign something like 169.254.x.x if you see a range that starts like that its most likely a dhcp problem

Bump

hey! you can't "bumb" a 15 minute thread! :p

Hey Man Sorry About that but my boss was giving me SH@# for not having all the internet up and running, I am not a big IT fundi But I am what the workshop has so as for the bump I will not do it again so Soon but please understand my dilema

To check whether the line is OK or dead, just plug a normal telephone handset in and listen for a dial tone.

If you hear no dial tone, line is dead.

If there's a dial tone, check whether the router is connecting to the internet or not. (Should you've set up ICS, make sure it is enabled and operational).
