Good day,

I am not sure if the is in the correct section as I am not sure what the problem is. So I will give just a bit of background.

I am currently looking after a Aunts house for most of the year while she is overseas. Now, I have a PS3 and would like to connect it to play some online games.

No the problems is with the connection. The Wi-Fi picks up perfectly on my phone (however I do not have the password) but that is not important. I connect the Ethernet cable to the PS3 from the modem (all necessary lights are green on the modem, I think)

No when I go through the settings on the PS3 network settings, It picks up the ISP and but when it does the internet test, it says failed. The suggested solution is using the PPPoE username and password to connect that way, but I have no clue what that is.

I am not sure if the problem is with the Internet or the PS3

If anybody has experienced this before or know a solution, please advise, as I am craving some online gaming.:D

You need to setup the PS3 to connect automatically, through LAN, not through PPPoE.
I connected by using the "easy" way as is suggested where all the settings are configured automatically and still nothing. I did not use PPPoE, that was only what the PS3 suggested.

Can it perhaps be a problem on the Internet side, I don’t have a PC or anything to check. Spent almost an hour last night trying to get through to Telkom with no luck.

Alright the next question is, do you know if the router is DHCP enabled? The PS3 might not get an IP from the router thus it will fail. Otherwise you will check from a PC what the settings are for your network and add them manually into the PS3, with the IP address being a different number at the end, of course.

Best bet is to check on a laptop or something first.
Chances are the router is not actually authenticating or syncing.

How will I see on a PC if it is or not?

I am not sure, I don’t think the router is all that new, I think it is Netgear (I am clueless when it comes to these type of things) how will I check what the settings are for the network on a PC. (will take mine there tonight)

Plug the ethernet cable into a computer and see if there is an internet connection. If there is, you should be able to set up your PS3 as such:

Internet Connection Settings - Custom - Wired Connection - Auto-Detect - Automatic - Do Not Set - Automatic - Automatic - Do Not Use - Enable

Thank you, I will take my PC there tonight to see if it connect or not. Will then use your method.

However, if my PC does not connect, how and what do I do then? (at home it was set up for me, so no idea how to do this)

Post the make and model of the router.

You could try to connect with wifi as well. If you don't get an internet connection on the computer it's a symptom of another problem and not your settings.

what do you think might be that problem?

I got it to work, after spending what felt like an eternity waiting on the phone. The just re-synced the line and I was able to connect.

Thanks for all the advise!
