I hope someone can help. I have 2 pcs running XP home. Pc1 is connected to the internet with USB modem.I have a ruiter and want to share connection with pc2. The ruiter requires a connection from the modem to the WAN port. Do I make this connection in addition to the existing connection? On the ruiter I have LAN ports 1-4. One cable will go from say LAN 1 to PC2, now, do I need another cable running from say LAN 2 to PC 1. I'm new at this, so I hope my question makes sense.

ignore the wan port.

set pc1 to internet connection sharing...it is part of windows xp.

stick pc1 into any of the lan ports on the router.
stick pc2 into any of the lan ports of the router.
there, it works.

your router, at this stage, just acts as a dumb hub/switch thingy.

you *can* put pc1 into the wan port, but you just add two layers of complication to the whole mess doing it this way.

alternatively, sell your router and just put a hub or a switch there instead, seeing as you only need a usb modem for your internet connection.

Thanks, I got that bit right. I'm still stuck though. VLAN light burning green, blue light on and L1 and L2 all green. Do I need to enter router settings using the IP provided in the manual? I tried entering routers ip in the address bar, but nothing happened. It will be nice to achieve this connection myself without calling in a technician, thanks.

1. make first PC's (the one with Internet connection)
IP address 192.168.0.1,
mask 255.255.255.0
No gateway
2. make 2nd Pc's
IP address 192.168.0.2
mask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.0.1

You just need to change the IP settings of the 2nd pc to use DHCP. When you share an internet connection, the 1st PC acts like a DHCP server (192.168.0.1) . Hope it helps!
