Internet Should be Free?

so if everything were free, where would the incentive be for the infrastructure to be upgraded, new technology rolled out, or service levels to be adhered to and improved upon?
please don't say we'd pay for it with taxes and the government would service it. we all know how that worked out...
maybe i'm missing your point as well?

Sadly even with the most expensively priced phone calls and internet in the world, it hasn't resulted in Telkom ever upgrading their legacy equipment.

So the oposite of your arguement is also true.

In first world countries where responsible governments or municipal funding is provided their development is far exceeding our own. Even tho I am sure telkom has made billions in the process.

Should water and electricity be free?
After all, they are basic rights!

yes but in limited quantities, like the Western Cape is doing it.

Limit everything. Then you can give it out for free :)

Nothings free, someone has to pay for it, tax means the working class... let see how far we get with free health and education...

yet water and electricity each require processing to be made usable, water needs to be purified and electricity needs to be made from coal for example.
And the network required for your free internet will magically appear wherever you wish to connect to it?

Private roads charge tolls, so private lines charge bandwidth.

Okay fair enough ,you guys have made a good points

Maybe you should re-phrase your question to something like:

Should government nationalise the entire fixed line network into a non-profit organisation?

what would I do without you.... :)
