Internet Solutions Acceptable Usage Policy

Now notice, no mention of any specific limits! :D

Trust IS to get it right. :)

Um, Afrihost state 100s of Gbs! And I personally would prefer them to give me a specific figure rather than chasing after me after I do 80Gbs!

I can't believe you have an issue with a figure being given but are totally happy to accept a vague reference to "improper or excessive usage".

And surely IS should also be confronted for making false statements :

The concensus is that IS have more than surpassed their counterparts for price and the new Uncapped ADSL products are considered great value for money.

R197 is cheaper than R199 in my maths class.

That was my statement :D

As Afrihost also use the IS backbone and both their business and ours are underselling MWeb by R40+ I felt justified.

There is no figure specified, because this is a true uncapped product. As we have been saying all along. They don't specify a figure because they don't intend cutting anyone off. It's uncapped remember. Nobody gets capped.

Your posts bring out the optimist in me! :D

Well, I'd trust Internet Solutions before I trust Mweb. I've been using IS for my uncapped for nearly a year now... and no problems so far.

Mweb on the other hand have a track record when it comes to cutting off "abusers"

Really?

IS reserves the right, to take necessary steps, to prevent improper or excessive usage. This action includes, but is not limited to:
- limiting throughput;
- preventing or limiting service through specific ports or communication protocols; and/or
- a complete termination of service to customers with improper or excessive usage.

Yes really. I've been using IS uncapped for over a year now. I have never known them to cut anybody off and I've never received any warnings from them. So I know they are trustworthy. I have also spoken to several CEOs of the various ISPs and asked them their opinion about these new "uncapped" products. All of them told me to stay with IS.

So we aren't actually discussing the published acceptable usage policies any more but rather your personal opinion of the said companies. This is a little unfair on the companies whose uncapped services you have never used I'd say.

There seems to be just a wee bit of bias coming through here. You attacked Afrihost and Mwebs use of the term uncapped when they were shown to have fair use policies but you are defending IS.

And to add, you may have been using IS uncapped for a while but with the new service being affordable to more people they will no doubt have more people using the service therefore a greater need to enforce their AUPs.

I think we shouldn't even be defending Mweb on these threads by the whiners.
My answer is please go with another company. Please.
The less ppl on Mweb, the less over-subscribed my Mweb bandwidth will be. Actually not in our best interests to promote the company we are using. Less ppl = more bandwidth and speed.

Just saying...

No, there is a big difference in the published policies. If you can't see the difference then perhaps you should be asking your school for a refund?

I understand that you have some inside knowledge, but Imagine/IS call this a "basic" uncapped product, and right on the front page of their site they say it is meant for home users that want uncapped access for browsing, email etc and that if you want to do serious downloading and streaming you should look at the more expensive IS uncapped accounts. Obviously with IS having two different uncapped accounts, and this one being the cheaper product, it can't really be true uncapped. Why do you see this product as being the one true uncapped account when Imagine definitely do not seem to think so, and neither do IS from what I can see. They give guidelines for how to minimise bandwidth being used for online gaming on their AUP.. doesn't sound like they want you to be moving much data at all.

I'm just going by the published Fair Use Policies. This one would pass the ASASA test of what uncapped really is. Afrihost's would not. The Advertising Standards Authority has already rule on this issue of what uncapped really is. I'm just going by their published determination.

Okay, but that doesn't really help if practically Afrihost may (or may not) have the better product. I don't think anyone cares about the technicality of being able to call the product uncapped, we understand that bandwidth is still quite expensive and ISPs are going to have to implement some kind of AUP/shaping rules so we want to know what those are in reality. Using some vague language so that it can pass the ASASA test means nothing to us. It sounds to me (definitely from Imagine's description) that this product is intended to being far lower usage than Afrihost's.
