Internet via TV has arrived

I think Nick333 is trying to point out that it is "Internet via TV" and NOT "TV via Internet".

TV via Internet should be something that every broadband user can enjoy. But alas, only in countries other than South Africa is it possible without paying the exhorbitant (err, ridiculous) prices we have to pay. At this stage anyway...

Well.. its another name for "We are degrading the TV content to make space for web pages you will never look at"

Its just a interactive snapshot of a web page streamed to your decoder...big whoopee..
 
Ummmm, I'm a little confused. As far as I'm aware both News24 and Fin24 have been available on DSTV for months already, if not years.

I went through channel 59 (News24) today and can't really say I noticed any significant difference to what I saw last time I used it ... a few months back.

Is there a point I'm missing?

Execs sitting in a board-room saying.. "Our profits are down by 1 million rand to 17billion this fiscal year!, what can we do to boost the profits again?"
reply : "We can relaunch something totally misleading and put a new catch-phrase to it.."
execs: "Gooood! .. whats the name" <lots of coffee drinking>
execs: "we have got it!! We will name static pages that we will scrape from the internet, - <drum roll> Internet via TV!!" :D

And the masses went out and bought Decoders so they can see "Internet via TV"...

Absolutely correct. Does anyone remember multichoice launching "internet" content via satellite a couple of years ago ? satellite email was to follow soon after. Who out there has one of those IR keyboards that they paid R300 odd for in the top of a cupboard somewhere?

Multichoice made a few mill off the sales of those things, provided a few months worth of seriously crap content, then stopped the service.
 
It isn't internet via tv... For that to be true there would have to be a browser in which I can type any addy.

Sun City has got true Internet via TV in their rooms!

Pricey but cool!

This News24 stuff on DSTV is not Internet via TV. It is just hype... It might mirror text content from the web, but it isn't true Internet via TV...

I think in the hotel adjoining Sandton City they also have a thing where you can browse the net via the TV.. or at least as far as I remember there was a keyboard and I remember my mom 'looking as if' she was browsing.. was too young to try it myself
 
Internet via TV is not a 10th as exciting as made out, but I do from time to time watch channel 59 (new24). Kills a few minutes while Discovery broadcasts yet another 5 minute Toyota docu-ad (can I claim the coining of that word :D )
 
Any bets on Telkom restricting this to 54cm black n white tv's only? Use of color tv's would be regarded as abuse.

:confused: Color me bamboozled by all the hyperbole. It's not really Internet if there are only two sites. Just like the 40 "CD qualiy music channels". Not CD quality at all (play through any hi-fi to hear for yourself). Music? More like muzak (elevator music). If you hear a song you recognize, count yourself lucky.

:mad: This stuff would make excellent fertilizer for my garden. It is to soften us up for another price increase. It wouldn't work on my very old decoder anyway...

i. I find the quality very good, if not CD quality, nearly as good

ii. Oh please, the songs are almost always recognizable/familiar. I usually pretty much only listen to the EuroHits channel, so that could be why seeing how it plays all the stuff you'd expect from MTV and all
