I have gone back five pages which takes me to about April but did not see any answers / posts

I have been reading about the case of Ross Ulbricht ( Silk Road )
and
Was wondering about the best apps / procedures to use to maintain privacy / anonymity on the digital highway ( and byways )
There is of course the TOR network which is discussed ( which I do not know much about )

One article recommended this

https://www.ipvanish.com/pricing.php

I understand the basics of VPN's but real web security is a complex subject.

Any suggestions ideas ?

You could look at Tails (https://tails.boum.org/) - this includes a TOR enabled browser and should not leave traces on the host machine if you use it correctly.

VPN's are good but if you pay for the service with a credit card / paypal you still leave traces

Will check it out
Yup
and
That is why "they" want to get rid of CASH !

The main thing when using VPNs is that you should use one that doesn't keep any logs and also allows anonymous payment methods, if you want to go as far as hiding your identify from the VPN provider.

I use private internet access and they meet both those requirements: https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/

NO "safehaven" !

This is, however, a specifically targeted demand or request (most providers will happily cooperate when it comes to catching pedophiles, for example), so only specific individuals already identified by the authorities need be too concerned.

Do you see the nasty little cop-out ?

Do NOT use ANY service that is based in the USA
or
ANY country that has any sort of extradition treaty with the US or its allies
ie. Where the ISP / Provider in that country can be forced to release logs or access or even physical servers )

Please note this includes ALL Nordic countries.

I have no problem about my identity (doesn't even matter when using an anonymous payment method), the issue comes in with logging traffic, if there are no logs, then there is nothing to turn over, even with a court order.

Sorta also depends on how dodge the stuff you're doing is.

Pretty sure NSA etc is keeping good tabs on me despite the occasional VPN use (PIA). Not ideal but couldn't be arsed to do more. Just want to keep the advertisers off my back.

Mandatory

Mandatory data retention
Something to be aware of when choosing a privacy-friendly VPN provider is where it is based (i.e. under which country’s laws does it operate). Many countries (including many European countries) require communications companies to keep logs for a certain amount of time, although whether these laws apply to VPN providers can vary somewhat (in Europe the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Romania, and Sweden are popular places to base a VPN service because VPN providers in these countries are not required to keep logs).
If a VPN provider is based in a country which really requires it to keep logs then it will do so, no matter what other impression it tries to give

The US is not one of the countries with mandatory data retention laws. Its completely voluntary and companies do not need to keep logs unless they want to. Obviously, if they do keep logs, then those logs can be obtained by law enforcement agencies.

"Current Status: The United States currently has no mandatory data retention law."

Read the story about Ross Ulbricht and the Silk Road I posted earlier
Read Edward Snowden on what actually happens in real life in the US with the FBI / NSA / Secret Service / Homeland Security
Watch Michael Moore's new movie "Where to Invade Next"

Good luck to you IF you trust these people

ToR doesnt guarantee anonymity, which I think most people using it are aware of.
As was said, the type of traffic you are doing would decide how much you need to scrub and hide your steps.

buying a vpn service is pretty easy, use bitcoins that you either purchase in person or get cleaned through one of the online cleaning services. You can go a bit further and only use the vpn on purpose built VM which is then destroyed and re-created using certain techniques to further hide information. You can start piggy backing off other wifi's to further anonymize yourself, the list goes on.

My browsing habbits dont really warrant large amounts of security, i do enough to protect myself more from criminal activities than anything else

The space for individual private unmonitored activity gets smaller and smaller.
Perhaps it is time to start reading and learning -- and testing
and
Watch a few more movies .....:D
