Hi,

Just looking for some advice pls,

We have a branch of our company in Harare, Zimbabwe. I need to replace one of my server's there, but before I go that
route I am considering a hosted solution. Should I host it in Zim, or SA(Hetzner). Not sure how the internet in Zim is. Anybody have a similar situation, or have worked with Zim ISP etc?

Thanks
Appreciated!

The link between here and Harare is provided by Liquid Telecom. It was pretty good last time I was there...

Where is the branch in Harare?

Hosting will be cheaper here, it's very expensive there due to small scale and large backup power costs BUT you have to balance it out against the connection the office that side will need. I wouldn't go with anything other than fibre(adsl is completely broken and LTE runs the risk of falling over with the power and is RIDICULOUSLY expensive), see if you can get and what the costs are of fibre and if it's less than the saving of hosting here then host here.

We have a fibre connection at the office. For this specific server there will only be 5 users and connecting in and out of office. So hosted is definitely on the cards. Just concerned that I will get complaints from users that the connection to the SA Server will be slow

Ask the prospective hosting provider for the hostname/IP address of a server that answers ping and traceroute which they're already hosting at the facility where they would host your server. Then have the staff in the Harare office ping and traceroute to that server, and see what the latency is like. Since the office has fibre, I'd expect it ought to be consistently less than 50ms.

If there's fibre in the office hosting in SA will be fine, they won't even notice. But the pings and traceroutes are a good idea just to double check.

How do you know this, we don't even know what's running on this server, speed of internet etc.

1. All the fibre in Zim is capable of 100Mb, you don't even think of remote hosting if you need more than 100Mb and even if needed another fibre line is easy.
2. The fibre links to SA are fine, personal experience both at home and my fathers servers(he runs Zim's "saswitch").

This is zim we're talking about not SA, they fall over each other trying to get fibre to you... Laid cable for our entire neighbourhood just because us and a neighbour wanted it, 3km of fibre for 2 houses...

And if you're in the right spot you can get VDSL from TelOne, LTE from Econet, WiMax from YoAfrica and fibre from ZOL...

Hi Guys,

Thanks for posts, greatly appreciated! Just some feedback for someone else who might need it. I have run a few test's from my Zim Office to a Hetzner test server I setup and getting a 19ms ping. I have been warned though that the link to ZIM - RSA does go donw from time to time. Price difference between Zim / RSA is +/- R10 000 per year.
Cheers
