Sorry for asking it here but you guys give great reply's :D

how much bandwith does casual surfing ( including looking at pics on google) takes? I need internet at home for cheap. No downloading of anything bigger than a couple of mb or maby even no downloading at all. ( I download at work, they don't have any problems with it, lucky me!)

What would be my best choice and how much would it cost. Once off and monthly.

Thanx

If you want to go on a contract, then 1Gb should be enough for what you have indicated.

If you run out you can then Top Up, as required.

If you continuously run out of cap, you can upgrade your contract.

If you're looking at 1GB, cheapest is pre-paid 3G, buy a 2GB bundle which expires after 60 days. Total cost R189 a month. That's with buying airtime through PnPay.

Edit: And the speed kicks Telcoms excuse for "broadband" in the nuts.

If you have a decent cellphone you can use that as a modem. PnP, just ask for vodocom or mtn airtime at the teller, after that's loaded you convert the airtime to a databundle through the particular sp's menu system.

Check that you have 3G coverage in your area.

@ponder: is that price including adsl and phone line rentals?

I have a samsung i780. just cant get internet shairing to work. Any ideas. If I connets with my phone and have a data bundle loaded wil it then use the data before my normal airtime or is there a setting somewhere? please excuse all my questions, Im out of touch with everything.

If you have a data bundle it will use that and not your airtime. Keep an eye on the usage though, when it goes out-of-bundle or expires it gets very expensive.

It's a dial-up connection, have you tried sharing it in networking?

Ok wil do. Any idea how to use my phone (i780) a a modem?? I just cant get it right.

xp sp2. The software doent want to install. But I have the pc sync software installed and it works. What else do I need?

I'm not familiar with that model phone but, check that your PC can see the modem on the phone, may need to get drivers for that (usually installs with the software).
You may need to get your SP to send their internet settings to your phone. Check their website how to do that or phone them.

U looking @ about R1000 for a K3565 3G usb modem if you buy it cash. What I am doing @ the moment is i browse using Opera Browser with Turbo enabled. What this does is compress the web pages (you will notice picture quality degradation), but it does decrease the amount of data u use by a nice amount so you can browse more for less.

Should you want to see a certain picture in its full glory, just right click it and select "download in full quality"

Just a option for you to consider.

Thanx for all the replys. Wil play around with it tonight. I use Opera at work. I am really anti microsoft. hehe

Adsl rental YES.
Phone line rental NO.

Shot, it's not too bad with all those "extra's" I guess. I assume it is shaped?

Telkom Installation and Line rental
So that Total for ADSL is:
residential line rental (R131.00) + DoBroadband1 (R199) = R330.00

I know I'm comparing apples to oranges here. Effectively I have to see the value 10GB local and those other extras at R141.00 (R330-R189).

Speed wise (keeping it as simple as possible) and to be fair.
Telkom 1Mb/s (R413.00) - Telkom 384kb/s (R152.00) = R261 extra to get a comparitive ADSL to 3G speed.

So where's the sweet spot that starts getting cheaper than 3G?
For a speed that maybe reaches 4Mb/s, spread that cost over a 4 user household or business to get 1Mb/s each.
Line rental: (R413 + R131 + R199) / 4 = R185 per person with SheerHosting 4GB. Next one is axxess 4GB @ R239 which puts it over the 3G value per person.

Maybe I'm missing something but I see no value in having ADSL in this country with a 1GB cap. Thoughts?

Telkom is busy testing 8Mbps lines, so they might have a nice surprise for ADSL users in the New Year. Guess 384Kbps will become 1Mbps, and so on.

If you have the Telkom 1Mbps line, just buy yourself a nice 10GB package from afrihost.com - think its R29 a Gig.

It'll be a while before the country sees 8Mb/s lines besides that HSDPA can reach 3.6Mb/s already. I was ignoring that to keep things simple and fair, and to find that spot where it is cheaper to go for ADSL. All while trying to turn apples into oranges to compare with the lemons :)
Maybe MTN and Vodacome will catch a wakeup and offer larger databundles, that will change the playing field somewhat.
