Hi guys,

I'm thinking of setting up a local Internet Gaming Cafe. On the weekends it will offer place for 50+ gamers to hook up onto our LAN and play what ever. Ofcource there will be the some tournaments.

I was thinking of R100 entrance fee which includes 25Mb international cap for updates etc. You could buy more.

I was thinking of a premises in the milnerton area.

Is it a good idea?

PS I hope this isn't counted as spam, as nothing exists yet, its just market research.

I think it would be a good idea, nut just make sure you setup in a place which has a need for an internet cafe..

I live in langebaan, and a computer shop opened in our "new mall" last year Oct.. It was well setup, had a smoothie bar which was good, about 12 computers for internet use and sold pretty good hardware. Their idea was to have LAN evenings on weekends, for about 50-100 per person with snacks and pizza etc provided.. I never went to one, but the place closed down last week....

I didnt expect them to last long as there is no market for that type of computer shop here, but he had a very good idea going..

Well we were planning to do something similar but skip the food, and provide internet access.

I know plenty of people who could be interested in a 'LAN B-day'. Where birthdays are held with a lan of friends.

ahhh yes and then no1 needs to worry about cleaning up....well you do, but we don't :P...sounds good

In theory I think the idea sounds good, there's no real places except Cafe Viva that I can think of that has something similar.

Of course, you'll need to have a very well designed network, so that gaming doesn't interfere with the internet or other services. Need decent hardware to play the popular games, and decent screen sizes.

Comfortable chairs, along with decent keyboards and mice. Those can make a huge difference. Also, the network will need very good AV protection, as people putting in flash drives are sure to bring in nasty things sooner or later.

Some software to control the internet usage time/limit wise, Antamedia products come to mind. Of course, all your software needs to be spot on and legal, since the anti piracy people love to taget internet cafe's and so on. Document every single software purchase.

Lastly, maybe hook up to the Cape Town WUG, so that at certain hours and on weekends, everyone can play against each other in a big tournament. Also, with there being no charge on the WUG, people can download stuff that might otherwise have eaten up internet cap.

Hope this helps :)

yup - I would go - althuogh be willing to fork out some major money on the PC hardware... nothing urks me more than COD4 on Low Detail Settings :D

CTWUG! Excellent idea. thanks Asha'man X

@Zulash I understand you dont like playing on low graphics but it beats not plaing or lagging...

This is my gaming PC:
Pentium Dual Core 2.0Ghz
2 x 1024Mb Ram
80 Gb Seagate HDD
Genius Keyboard + Mouse
geforce 8400GS with TurboCache , Pci-E 16x , HDCP Compliant , 256+256mb
http://www.xfxforce.com/en-gb/products/graphiccards/8series/8400GS.aspx (model PV-T86S-WANG)

24 Port Managed Switch.

That should Run COD4 right :p Remember i need to buy at least 9 of these so slight changes in the price and it get beeg very quick...

actually a decent setup, while the graphix wont be anything special, the game will definatley be playable. :) Ill come to your LANs hehe

theres also an existing Cape Town LAN. Organized Chaos. been around for YEARS! they are thriving and people flock to them in droves.

they host LANs every month in one of two venues: Theo Marais Hall (Milnerton) or Bellville Velodrome (uhhhhhhh, in Venezuala, or Bellville, i forget)

their network infrastructure is crazy. really fast expensive stuff apparently

Yes i know OC, i was thinking something a little smaller and easier to manage.

Any one interested in this then:

50 + 24 seats
45Mb Free Cap
24 "Comfy" chairs and desks, VIP early birds :)
The rest on white plastic chairs with tressel tables.
Full connection to CTWUG.

Does R125 VIP and R100 normal sound like we'll see you there :p? Once every 3 weeks sound good enough? Is there any interest?

Ok so atleast one seat. That might pay for my coffee :D (rent? huh whats that?)

if i may ask: location? where you going to get a venue to rent the whole month? sounds pretty big to be empty most of the time :(

sounds interesting, but i have this sneaky suspicion that i might flop based purely on the competition out there. what is the incentive to choose this LAN over one of the other existing regular LANs? seeing as the attendance fee is the same as the others, wouldn't a bigger LAN be better?

Well i found premises i want to us for something else but cannot use it until decemebr. This means i'll have to some how "keep" the premises for a while, so the best way to get rent paid is hire it, so if i hired it for lans, i might pay the rent :)

Its in an office that is adjacent to koeberg road in milnerton.

Why choose mine? 7-11 around the corner, free international bandwidth, connection to the CTWUG. I dont want to make money, just pay the rent for 3 months.

I was planning on using the space for advertising in the mean time since it is nearly directly facing oncoming traffic. The office has large windows facing the road. And as you may know koeberg is a pretty busy road.

oh yeah, girlfriend lives right there. handy location for me then. also just up the road from theo marais. might give it a bash if all goes well, but for now i would probably prefer the established LAN's (larger groups = bigger games and bigger shares)

what happens to the LAN after december though?
