Afternoon knowledge pool! I've come to pick your brains for some advice on investing internationally. For the purpose of this discussion my intent isn't to invest with a South African organisation which tracks international markets or has exposure to them. I want to convert my funds to USD and invest with the actual funds.

What I have determined so far:

I will either be opening a USD account through RMB or Standard Bank, most likely Standard as this can be linked to my existing profile.

Being a SA resident complicates things a bit in dealing with brokerages but I'm looking at opening an account with Interactive Brokers or similar who don't seem to care where you are based.

Funds to be transferred from my USD account to brokerage where I would most likely be splitting the investment into a Vanguard tracking fund or ETF and some other more risky trackers.

I am not looking at investing in individual stocks.

The reason for the above is that the wife and I have discussed the possibility of immigration at length and it isn't for us. We'd like to start building up funds for the kids to leave though in about 10 odd years time and be able to fund their studies etc.

If worse comes to worse though we'll have access to these investments and transactional banking services with a card in USD.

Initial planning is to do about $1k a month and take it from there.

Any and all advice is appreciated

Webtrader probably easiest if you go with standard
