Iomega will never admit it, but its new ScreenPlay Multimedia Drive is aimed at people who prefer to pirate their entertainment rather than wait for it to be broadcast.
Iomega will never admit it, but its new ScreenPlay Multimedia Drive is aimed at people who prefer to pirate their entertainment rather than wait for it to be broadcast. As broadband speeds have increased, downloaded content has become increasingly popular. It is what prompted Iomega to release storage-based home entertainment systems such as the ScreenPlay.
It is essentially a large (500GB) external hard drive to which audio-visual capabilities have been added — it can be hooked up to your TV and the content of its hard drive can be played back. It’s a nice idea, but poorly executed. The ScreenPlay is lousy as a home entertainment system.
The on-screen menus are a joke, it’s difficult to navigate through your content and the remote control is unresponsive. The ScreenPlay has a slot for an HDMI port but our review unit’s port was covered with hard plastic: it seems you have to shell out more for an HDMI version. So, we had to hook the ScreenPlay up using standard A/V ports.
Iomega, which is being acquired by storage giant EMC, is known for excellent external hard drives. But in home entertainment it has a long way to go. Look elsewhere for your needs.
