If ease of use is what you are after, then this product should be at the top of your list. Simply copy your movies onto an external drive or flash disc, insert it into the USB port, and press play. It’s as simple as that.

Terrestrial and satellite broadcasting, and DVD are not the only ways we enjoy TV shows and movies in the living room today. Many
consumers also have digital media on their home PCs that can often only be enjoyed in the confines of the study.

Over the years, we have seen numerous devices that stream digital content from a PC, but some of these often require networking skills to make them work.Similarly, devices with built-in storage that have no networking capabilities still need to have the content manually copied to the device. The latest digital media player from Iomega takes a slightly different approach and allows you to simply connect any external hard drive or USB flash disk (FAT32 or NTFS) for quick and easy movie or music playback.

The ScreenPlay TV Link is no bigger than a box of cigarettes, and the tiny remote won’t take up any space either. On the back of the unit you will find an HDMI port, component video (Y, Pb, Pr) ports, and composite video ports. The kit also includes a SCART adapter for those TVs that have the required port, and there is a power socket and single USB 2.0 port neatly tucked in here too.

Even though we were not too happy with the single USB port, we cannot find fault with how quick and easy the Iomega ScreenPlay TV Link is to use.

We connected a wide variety of external storage devices (including our Iomega EV drive), and it faithfully played every file on every one of our devices. While the ScreenPlay TV Link only supports MPEG-1, MPEG-2, and MPEG-4 video file formats, these are the most popular and cater for the widest audience.

It also supports a wide range of audio codecs, and it can read JPEG files. The user interface is extremely easy to navigate, and even if your portable drive as a complex folder structure, you’ll be able to quickly get to the content you want. What we found the most surprising during the month or so that we tested this device was that it can fast-forward and rewind through digital files without skipping too far or accidently freezing during the process.

The setup menu within the firmware also offers a variety of customisable settings, ranging from audio to video output, and allows you to squeeze a little extra performance from the device if you have an HD (or HD-ready) TV. For our tests, we made use of the HDMI port to play back digital media on our 42-inch LCD.

For the files that were captured in HD, the playback quality was superb and we were very pleased with the audio quality as well.
