Does anyone know of a 'faster' (AND SAFE) fw download location. My 4.2.1 update for iPhone 4 stopped in the middle of the download, and I just resumed it, but it got corrupt so I cannot restore it (and it is the largest file in the firmware, the only file in the ipsq that is >600MB that got corrupt) so I might as well redownload. If it was a smaller file, I could ask someone just to extract and upload it for me.

Has anyone used another fast/trusted source yet?

I only get 20kbps on average from the direct links (avoided using iTunes as that gives more problems).

Have a 1mbps iBurst connection, should be able to handle it easily

ya but remember.. every tom dick harry and his dog is downloading the update from the apple servers now.. wait a few days and the madness will calm down :)

all the links point to the apple download centres tho.. so they will be slow from any site...

Posted this in another thread but thought would be of use here incase anyone still needs the info:

Just to make life easier for some, here are the official URLs for those who don't wanna go looking, I always download from these, then Shift Restore/Update (or Option on a Mac)

These are the SHA1 checksums I have for the files too:

SHA1(iPad1,1_4.2.1_8C148_Restore.ipsw)= 8717b3bedc925b587566442ad375aa65d857e79a
SHA1(iPhone1,2_4.2.1_8C148_Restore.ipsw)= d2ed58586e8ca2153f2e2ec585bba8afc5173378

SHA1(iPhone3,1_4.2.1_8C148_Restore.ipsw)= 366b28e9c95936bd4b11a84d54fefaf079fd6411

I used the direct links as provided by MikeCTZA in the other thread, the third download (initiated at 2am this morning) eventually downloaded without interruptions. almost 1.5GB wasted to download a 600mb file. Thats ouch!

Just for ... well ... fun ... my d/l of the iPhone4 firmware:
Downloaded 624.2 megabytes in 41 seconds. (15317.31 KB/s)

That is just bragging!!! ;-)

I know I just couldn't resist. Was from work where the connection is super quick, my poor home 384kbps wouldn't come close to that. I dunno if my LAN would even be able to do that as well - hee hee.

What is the difference between Shift -> Restore & Shift -> Update?

What is the difference between Shift -> Restore & Shift -> Update?

If you simply hit the update or restore button, iTunes will automatically check for updates, download them via iTunes and run the update...
The alternative is to download the IPSW file directly.
Once you've saved the downloaded file on your machine, you have to hold the Shift key on a PC or the Alt/Option key on Mac in order to bypass the automatic iTunes update and browse you machine, like you would for any file, for the IPSW file you'd like to restore from.

Yes, what greg0205 said from holdinf the Shift/Option key angle but I think the more correct answer is the Restore vs Update. As I understand it (I didn't read the manual / site so this is just how I understand it).

Update - will update the firmware and put everything back as it is with 1 click
Restore - puts your phone back to a standard firmware without anything on it, and should then ask if you want to restore your data when you connect the phone (so the 2nd step isn't compulsory)

Thanx for the info. Much appreciated.
