iOS fragmentation issue

So, Apple would have us believe that fragmentation is a serious issue counting against Android; however, Apple is now the a perpetrator of the self-same crime.

My app, tested on all but the latest 8.1.1 works 100%; this is not the case for for 8.1.1. where it crashes with an almighty thud.

Silly me for assuming if it works on most iOS versions, it works on them all!

That is not fragmentation. That's just a bug. Annoying though.
Fragmentation refers to a large amount of different API versions across current devices. It is also, mistakenly, used to refer to the various hardware differences between devices

Perhaps, however it does indicate minute software/hardware difference between devices which requires you to test as many different versions as possible. A plague for both Android and iOS.
