Ah, network scanning with these MFD's can be quite a pain. I have it set up at my school so that staff scan to e-mail, and that's that. It can chew up space, but it's not so bad, since not every staff member scans, and they don't scan too often. Scan to FTP or a server is too big a pain and too confusing to them.
The reason your printer may stop printing is becasue the drivers on the clients no longer know where to print to. With our Richoh NRG's, you set a static address on the printer, and when doing the drivers on the client, you have to point it to that address. When you change address, the client gets lost.
As for DHCP, it's a great idea, but if your router is handing out the address, there might be your problem. I may be wrong, but I don't think a routers' DHCP server is advanced as a Windows 2003 DHCP server for example. Perhaps that's why you couldn't reserve an address.
