I want to demo an app I made. And remotely too (the app is made for remote access).

Is there anyway to stop the viewers from taking it and passing it off as their own? NDAs?

You need to be a bit more specific, what is this app, is it web? is it a normal desktop app?

Oh, sorry. Web based

Well unfortunately ideas are worth nothing if not implemented and advertised. You would most likely need to register trade marks and what not, but if you're opening it up to a few select people. You can try put an NDA in place, but when its open the world anyone can take an idea and adapt it. al la. Myspace/Facebook/Orka etc..

That's fine, I just want to demo one aspect of the app to a handful of people right now (potential clients/employers). Hopefully email communications and an NDA can make them think twice about passing it off as their own. Not that I believe having these documents will help my case in anyway, nor would I have any idea what to do with them if worse comes to worse.

Once I put it out there, whatever happens is fine. I'd want to open source my current implementation in any event... I think it can do some good for plenty of people.

Yeah, well you can try to enforce an NDA. But you will need a proper lawyer to draw up documents and get the to sign in to it etc. I have an idea, but it borders on the fringe of legality lol.

If you want to give out a demo of your web app I'd suggest making a version that's able to demo online, on a server you control entirely. So they don't get the code. Code obfuscation doesn't really work and is easy to reverse engineer, so if someone wants to steal it, they can.

Its not the code he's worried about, but the idea. So that is a moot point.

Yep, that's it. Haven't found any reference of this problem being attacked in this manner online, which is weird to say the least. That, or my google-fu is out of sync.

Had a chat with a legal aid clinic rep. Apparently, one can enter into a pre-agreement which will lead to a subsequent agreement between yourself and a client if the client does an implementation based on "your" idea (I find it... rude... to own ideas :p). Although you will have to somehow catch wind of this implementation. So there is some form of recourse.

Tx guys

If you want to limit access, then via the website cPanel protect the site with a user name and password.

In short, by editing your htaccess file.

ya, thought about that. But the scripts will be cached client side, and since its p2p on the best of days there goes my hope for a dev job.

Go to their offices and demo it from your pc from your localhost.
