Now that I have fibre, I want to lose Telkom for voice as well. What are the options? I need a 'line' for business as well as being able to to call a normal cell/landline.

Lots of VoIP providers including Vox, Mweb, and a host of others.

You can get a 087 number from them or a localised one (Jhb, CT, etc) and then payg or buy monthly minutes.

You need a sip device to connect to them, or some fibre routers provide the function on their routers. Then you just attach a handset to the router , configure the sip detail and you're good to go.

What router and service provider are you using?
Are you able to login and configure the router?

Hi,

We got hooked up on Friday last week with fibre and opened a FreshPhone account - which is free. You get allocated a free number. Our intention is to test it first to see if it caters for our needs, and then we will port our land line and purchase "airtime". Per second rates are cheaper, and there is no monthly fee. http://www.freshphone.co.za/

You can also port your Telkom number to them for a once off fee of R150 (i think), and you can use ZoiPer (app) to make and receive calls instead of purchasing an IP Telephone.

I'm thinking of using Switch Telecom. Service costs R45p/m and call rates are very competitive. The sales team is pretty responsive. They handle the Telkom cancellation and porting for R150. Will give them a go when Fibre is bedded down and my VDSL is cancelled.

Edit: Freshphone looks interesting. Might try that in the interim since it's free. Thanks 1gascan.

I have Vumatel Fibre using Cool Ideas 50/50 Package. I have 3 VoIP accounts.

1x Mweb Talk (Primary), 1x Freshphones (Backup) and a Extension to a PBX which is offsite with IT Support for some people (Runs on both Mweb and Freshphones on the PBX side)

So far super stable and call quality is awesome compared to Cellular(Vodacom) or Telkom Landline calls.

We also offer voip as a bolt on service, we should be dropping the extension fee soon.

C Fibre from Cell C flashes their Huawei B315s routers so that the VoIp settings on the router cannot be accessed. This means that you cannot add a corded or wireless VoIP phone via Freshphone to their router.

Was not mentioned when they made the sale. Caution!

Does anyone know how to overcome this so that I can subscribe a Yealink W52P VoIP phone?

What do I do with the firmware? I mean how do I use it to overcome the obstacle ...without Cell C trampling on me?

Thanks in advance.

All the Telkom routers I have had are running retail firmware.

This looks like an LTE router though. So check regarding frequencies

One limitation of this is that you can either connect the zoiper app or the telephone to the sip account, but not both at the same time. Which is a pity as that would have been the perfect solution.
