Hello All,

I have an iPad 2, which is still treating me very well, and has yet to battle handling anything thrown its way.

The wife is about to get her old man's iPad 1, since he's received the latest one as a gift from the States.

I'm just curious as to what the limitations, if any, would exist in regards to the 1st version? Will all the apps I currently use, work on it? Would they be slower etc? Or would any difference be negligible?

Secondly - what to do with regards to iTunes accounts?
I've been the only Apple user - so do we try and launch a US account for her as well?
Since she's not into tech in general, pretty sure opening a SA account will suffice, since she's probably not going to be interested in downloading music and movies etc.... only the mainstream apps so that she can browse the web, and maybe use it occasionally at work...
Or should I simply register it as my device, and synch it on my computer?
[Having said that - if were were to plug it in to my device, how would one "erase" the previous user's details, and input hers/mine as the new user?]

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

My kids still use the original iPad and while it's not as fast as the original one it's still definitely worth keeping around. You won't be able to install iOS 6, which some might claim is an advantage considering the maps fiasco, on it and some apps wont run but I'd keep it all the same.

Why not just share the same iTunes account? She might download an app or two that even interests you . . . and vice versa. :)

Once you connect the iPad to your computer for the first time it's going to erase everything on it so don't worry about that.

As bwana says: You can share one iTunes account. Our family uses one account across 2 iPads and 2 iPhones.

You'll find that some of the more graphics intensive games won't be supported, but that should be about it.

Nothing wrong with the iPad 1. We have an iPad 1 and an iPad 2 on the same account. Some games will however explicitly tell you that they don't support the iPad 1, or you can see it struggles a little bit. But these games are really in the minority.

There is a limit to how many devices can share one iTunes account. I think it's five.

My four-year old boy has an iPad 1, which tells you something about how rugged those things are. No case, no bumper. Sure, the back looks like a collision plate out of a linear accelerator. Still works like a champ, though. Yes, it's noticeably slower, but not so much that you'll be tapping your fingers and mumbling obscenities while it's chugging away.

No camera on the iPad 1 and some graphics apps expect that camera to be there and will complain if they don't find it.

"...the back looks like a collision plate out of a linear accelerator"

Lol!

Thanks for all the replies, peeps!
Reckon I'll synch on my account - and then just pop the main apps across. Pretty sure that once the bug bites... :)

It's five computers - I don't think there is a cap on the number of iOS devices.

EDIT - ok Apples T&C say:
(i) You may auto-download iTunes Auto-Delivery Content or download previously-purchased iTunes Eligible Content from an Account on up to 10 Associated Devices, provided no more than 5 are iTunes-authorized computers.

You can setup the device with an apple ID for your wife (iCloud integration/sync), and use another Apple ID in the AppStore.

ipad 1 still fine

Ipad 1 still fine...
I have a 1 and a 3 , skipped a generation as I normally do.. and to be honest I do the same things on the 3 as I did on the 1...
I also think the 3 will be the last ipad i purchases... I'm not a gamer so the Graphics don't really phase me .. and all the office application work the same on either...it is snappier in loading stuff....but not another R8000 (64gig+3g) worth of snappiness...
