Hi Everyone

I recently decided to sell my iPad 3 (16GB WiFi & 3G) and need to format it. I reset the settings and cleared all data on the iPad via "Settings", but it seems to be taking a long time to format - currently 4 hours with just the little circular icon moving around on the black screen. Has anyone else has this problem? Please can someone advise me what to do if this is a problem.

Thanks

Stop that, it takes hours and hours. Plug ipad into pc, open itunes, and then click on Restore in the middle of the page. Does it in about 10 mins. Takes it back to factory setting etc etc

hold the power button and the home button down together for about 10 seconds. The screen will go blank, carry on holding them then you will see the apple logo. Then let go. It will then boot up normally. then do as above.

Thanks. When restoring, do I have to update the software?

Not necessary. Can do after the restore if you want to.

Just FYI. The difference between the reset and clear and a restore in iTunes is that the first one does a secure wipe. Obviously you will need special forensic equipment to retrieve data "wiped" after a simple restore, but it can be done.

I connected my iPad to my PC and through iTunes I clicked "Restore" - however it is forcing me to update to iOS6. I don't mind doing this, but my internet connection is so slow, it would take forever to download iOS6. Can u please explain to me how to avoid updating?

just googled it. I was wrong, you unfortunatelly have to upgrade before you can restore.

iTunes will restore it to whatever the current firmware is. Given that 6.1 is out it will download it for the the restore if you haven't got it already. I don't believe it's possible to re-restore to an older version unless you have your SHSH blobs.

If you are selling it then either wait out the reset and clear or the restore to 6.1. I wouldn't go fiddling with convincing iTunes to load an old version with SHSH blobs.

iTunes requires a firmware file in its cache of updates.

If you've never updated on that machine before then it won't have this file and will have to download it to complete the restore, even if staying on the same version.
