So, a month in after getting my ipad i can give these views on it:

As with iphone, can not buy from itunes store acc (unless voucher route via via etc)
app store for ipad is ok for now, couple of fairly ok apps. Found one SA app on there in the form of the news24 ipad app - similar to DStv content on channel 415.

My approach to it was to think of it similarly to thinking of a pc, just much smaller and more compact with endless opportunities. I chose the wifi one without the 3g as i have a wifi network at home and a wifi network at work, so, for now no need for 3g. I run my company email on it and works 100% all the time.

Battery life is very good, takes quite long to charge (good couple of hours)

On the app side i have a couple of news apps (news24, bbc and reuters) i then have a couple of apps for the kids (bubble breaker, fish tank/aquarium etc) which they like.

Of course i have ibooks and the kindle app for ipad from amazon. Though i dont have a kindle, my ipad act as one with amazons' official kindle app for the ipad - have a couple of books i downloaded already and works perfectly with lots of nice features! Including reading in bed with a very dimmed background.

I also downloaded mindmap, which works nicely to unpack conceps etc and also got myself home budget to help turn my cents

Have the friendly/facebook app for ipad too and works nicely. Skype too and works like a charm

Cant see any fault with it at the moment! I use it every day! Got the apple ipad cover and some screen protectors too - strongly recommended!

Anyone else with an ipad wanting to share some good free or paid for apps?

And of course, this post was done from the ipad...!

Streamtome. Let's you stream or any song any video from your Mac or PC. Pretty great.

Most of the good apps and games are on the US store, it's worth getting a voucher for them.

Get yourself Docs-to-go. Brilliant.

It costs $14.99 in the app store (there is one for the iPhone and one for the iPad) and you can copy/sync all your documents (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) from your pc/laptop to your iPad - and edit it.

mmm Ipad apps i can live without ...
Taska --- so i can managed my tasks the GTD way
Zinio --- So i can read my Moutainbike UK magazines
ThoughsHD - Mindmapping
Ifiles -- store documents and also hooks up to dropbox
DROPBOX -- THE BEST APP EVER
EBAY - Love browsing for stuff to buy
Airvideo - so i can stream music, movies from my PC no matter where in the world i am
CinXPlayer -- so i can watch DivX movies without having to convert them to apple format
Friendly -- Facebook app
BBC NEws --- News
Trundle HD - the most addictive game ever

Thanks, have not bought from us store. If i buy and sync with my existing itunes acc, what will happen to my existing apps?

they stay on your ipad .... you just have to change stores everytime new updates come along.

I played with an iPad this weekend - WOW, very impressive little gadget. Also played Angry Bird on a friend's iPhone - now if that's available on the iPad I'll be sorely tempted...

I can easily see myself replacing my netbook with one of these. One thing - does it handle pdf files well? I'll be using it to read magazines, so that's very important.

The one thing that is putting me off is the lack of multi-tasking - I'd like to be able to use a spreadsheet and email at the same time.

There is a FANTASTIC app called goodreader. I use it rather than iBook. Basically its a document reader (think PDF, Excel, Word) hell you can even download a zip and it lets you read the docs contained in there.
It can connect to dropbox, gmail and google docs so you have access to read your documents.

Angry birds is on the iPad in HD and it is currently the best selling game on the device. Due to it being HD it costs $4.99

iPad = lifechanging

1. Yes Angry Birds IS available on the iPad - very good game on the large screen
2. It handles PDF files extremely well - I use goodreader, and download my magazines off the web straight to iPad, and read them from the iPad
3. Multi-tasking is coming in the next software upgrade, which could be next week. It was announced a few days ago (free upgrade)

The Apple apps already run in the background (iPod, Safari, Mail). All that's missing is 3rd party multitasking.

Its a pity that the use-case for i OS devices, with access only to the S.A store, in S.A is so limited...

I went online to do some research before purchasing my iphone over a year ago as I did not want my iPhone experience to be limited by a poor S.A store.

Result is that I created a US iTunes store account - and now have full access to all Apple's goodies - can buy iTunes gift cards for apps or get from relative overseas etc to top-up my account - once you have done this its then easy to use same account for iPad.

Then the power of these devices is unleashed..as you have access to the entire line-up of apps.

So I guess the lesson here is: create a US itunes store account, not an SA one - make sure you setup a US billing address (pretty easy to do via guides on the net) and enjoy :D

My iPad apps of choice so far:
Flipboard - once you setup your categories page - incredible app
Angry birds - simply the best
Starwalk - impresses everyone in the office
Goodeader - 'nuff said.
Avsforums - cause I'm geeky
Epic Citadel (UE3 Engine demo - just wow!!)
Twitter for iPad
Kindle for iPAD - THE reason I bought my iPad

Thanks for the advice. I think the iPad will fill a nice niche between my PC and netbook - general surfing in front of the tv (important!), pdf reading (important!), mailing, video and a bit of gaming entertainment.

My Apps:
Flipboard - awesome
MIT Sloan Management Review
HBR
BBC
FT
Bloomberg
Evernote
IMDB
Office HD (syncs to my Google Docs and Apps accounts and editable - only $7 odd)
Accuweather (free - its really accurate down to the hour when it will rain)
The Guardian Photos - really brings out the picture capability on the iPad
