Hi Guys

Just a quick question. If i purchase an 3G Ipad in the States will:

1. The SA Sims work
2. I only have access to a crippled App Store

Previously when i had an iPhone i was very dissappointed with the number of apps in the ZA app store. I would like to have a legitimate un-jailbroken device, but i hate being limited to such a small range of apps.

Can i activate it in the USA? Will that enable me to access all of the apps, or is there some other work around?

Thanks!

Hey

I would suggest getting yourself an US account on iTunes. The South African iTunes is quite limited.
The SA Sims do work, but you need the mini-sim (That is only available in September from Vodacom).

I got the 3G 64Gb one and I'm smiling all the way! :)

Swoosh, what is the data usage on your ipad?

1. yes, all iPads, sold everywhere, are unlocked as standard (unlike the iPhone). You can activate it there - it will come supplied with an AT&T micro sim card. Just connect it to iTunes and it will activate and sync. When you get home, it will work with our 3g networks, just trim a regular sim down to size using your AT&T card as a template to get the right size. Or you can buy a micro sim from MTN or Vodacom - I understand they are available already. But it would be cheaper to just buy a 99c sim card from Spar and cut it to size, then buy data bundles for it.

2. Yes it will be better to create a USA iTunes account (details on how to do it somewhere on this site) then you have access to far more apps, I don''t even think the ZA iTunes store has iPad apps yet, as it's not officially available here yet.

Oh, i find I use far less data on my iPad than I expected. I have been buying 1.2GB bundles at the start of the month, which expire after 2 months. But towards the end of month two, I have usually got like 400 MB of data left, so maybe a smaller bundle would be better for my iPad.

At the moment, I'm only using on wifi. At home, I've got uncapped, so I don't really care how much data is being used.
My friend made his own 'mini-sim' by using the AT&T sim, that comes with the iPad, as an example.

Ok guys, just some info on the lingo here.

Mini SIM = regular SIM (found in most phones today).
Micro SIM = new tiny SIM (found in iPad and iPhone 4).

Not true, Micro SIMs are already available. Got mine from Vodashop in Vodaworld like a week ago :)

I think most Vodashops have them. I got mine at Vodashop Sandton City.

Vodashop in jhb cbd (3 simmonds) does sim swaps to micro sim only, cant buy the sim and activate. Got mines there tho.
