Someone asked me clear a second hand ipad they purchased.

I'm not sure which iOS version it's running yet (don't have it with me) but should I want to update the iOS version to the latest available is there a way to do it without using the network or itunes? Maybe from a USB stick or dowloaded to the device?

Secondly they need apps to work on excel & word docs etc. Is addidtional software required and if yes what are the free and non-free options available.

Thirdly I suspect they will need an iTunes account and from what I've read inthe past getting a US account is better, procedure?

Oh and how do you clear the thing or reset it to factory defaults wipping all existing data. Can existing apps be backed up and restored even under a different account?

I'll be picking the thing up later this morning.

Unless the iPad is jailbroken you're going to need iTunes to update iOS. You may as well install it to one of your machines for current and future use. Then you can also have a look at the app store for 'Office' type apps.

Check with sandman for US account procedure.

You can reset the iPad from General settings. Existing apps are linked to previous owners iTunes account.

Post the model and iOS version when you have the device.

You can still download the update but you will need to have iTunes to install it.

Grr, means I have to boot into windows, sigh. Busy downloading itunes.

Thanks will keep you guys posted. I just hope the guy has a usb cable for the thing else I'll have to install a wireless card in my desktop and try and share the connection.

Ok, it's a A1430 (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Cellular 16GB iPad

I see it currently recognises cell C in the top left corner but access via 3g does not work, no apn, username or password specified. carriers set to automatic.

So I suspect it's fine to reset it to factory defaults as there is no data to be retained or cellular info on the thing.

I must say this thing has a frigging awesome screen!

You can try set the APN to internet, no user name or password required. If there is some credit on the SIM then you should get 3g, you might need to toggle it manually - go to Settings>General>Cellular and have at the settings there.

What version of iOS is it on?

No credit left. It's already running iOS 7.1.

I went to reset the thing to factory defaults only to be prompted for a apple id, sigh. So I went the recovery mode route which seems to work but now it's doing a frigging 2hr download which I suspect is ios again? Never come across such a piece of convoluted crap. Only thing I like about this thing is the screen :D

Do these things not charge via usb? wonder if the battery is gonna make it for the download :D

It should be charging if you're connected via USB although I believe some third-party cables don't provide full functionality.

iOS 7.1 has only been out a couple of days and is the most recent release, so I'm not sure what it might be downloading. I'd be a little concerned about getting access to the device after a version upgrade/restore since iOS 7 ties the device to an Apple ID to try and combat theft.

Well the recovery route mode did not work, 2hrs later and the frigging thing still wants a password for the apple id account.

How does one get rid of this?

You need to enter the (previous) owners apple id and password.

EDIT: if they're not with you they can go to http://icloud.com/find and remove that device from their account.

I speak to them tomorrow, hopefully the previous owner is still available and remembers what their password and then getting them to actually remove the device is another story. This might just end up being an expensive brick :D

Very interesting, looks promising. Why not sign up and give it a bash while you're waiting? I don't see that it can make the situation any worse than it is now.

I signed up last night already but I'm a bit lost. I tried adding the device with it's serial number but it finds nothing.

I will keep looking/trying and report back if I figure it out ;)

I've got the device managed by meraki but most of the request just sit at "pending".

Any one else wanna give it a bash here's a video on how to set it up.

I'd be happy to try it but I don't have a device on iOS 7 so I wouldn't be able to test the Activation lock issue. Maybe the device has to be activated before being able to apply the Meraki management tool, in which case you're snookered. It may at some point in iOS 7 have been possible to dodge the activation lock but Apple have probably plugged that gap....

I think apple may have plugged the hole in 7.1 as the responses in that apple thread were pretty recent. Either way that meraki system manager looks.

Just got a call as I'm typing this and they managed to get the apple id password from the previous owners wife, problem sorted.

OK good job, you should get it under control now
