I have never had one of these (or any apple product) before and am currently getting one set up for one of our managers.

I received it straight out of the box with no changes. (top of the range, 3g, wi-fi e.t.c.).

My questions are as follows:

Will I need to add any apps to the machine for him to be able to view and edit MS office documents? (power point, excel, word e.t.c.)

How exactly will mail synchronisation work? Will he be able to keep it synced with his laptop (windows) and still download emails when abroad?

Are there any web standards he will not be able to use and view?

If he gets an adapter so that he can use it on his monitor what resolutions can it get to?
Must he buy a special monitor for this or will it work with any vga/dvi/hdmi monitor?

Can he plug a keyboard and mouse into it? (at the same time as the monitor and an external drive?)

Are there any other restrictions or limitations I am overlooking?

Thanks for the help all, really awesome toy this :)

Hey,

1. you can use Pages (Word), Numbers(Excel) or Keynote(Powerpoint) for iPad. However natively the iPad should be able to open these formats but not edit it. The apps are $9.99 each :)
2. Yes if you are using MS Exchange or GMAIL etc.. Mail will be on both iPad and laptop.
3. No Flash :( but there are some Apps like "Skyfire Browser"
4. Not sure about the resolution, i have never used the external display adapter
5. He can get the iPad dock which has a keyboard - dont think there is a mouse for it..

6. NO Limitations :) it Apple man..

No flash support, no usb ports, no multi-tasking etc. Those seem like pretty serious limitations to me! :p

Thanks for the assistance :) I have read on several sites the maximum resolution for external displays is 1024x768 so at least I have an answer there (oh 420P for hd movies and such max).

I'll have to get him to buy the above apps :)

Grr damn and here I was about to remove a kidney with a rusty spoon to be able to afford one for myself :p

(seriously want one after playing with this snazzy, fast, ergonomic, intuitive and fun machine).

No Flash support = yeah, but HTML 5 is the way to go man..

No USB - Apple keeps there standard connector

Multi-tasking - IOS 4.2.1 FTW

Yep you can get the iWork apps. There is another one that I use, Office HD which is about $7 when I bought it which allows me to edit docs. I use Google Apps and this links in to all my documents on Google Docs and allows me to edit. You maybe able to transfer the docs using iTunes but not sure on that. ( I having been living in the clouds for a while now :) )
I have a bluetooth keyboard that makes edit or typing a large doc a breeze as opposed to typing on the touch pad.
With regards to the VGA adapter, only some apps recognise it and therefore display. Apple produced apps like Keynote etc do but I have another presentation app called Mighty Meeting which doesnt.

Multitasking in the updated iOS 4.2 out this week. (Be warned it is about 600Mb) Also the ability to group apps into folders. Which has seriously de-cluttered my desktop and sorted the apps.
You will obviously sync with iTunes, please do this on the primary machine that is going to be used by your manager - it makes life easier.
Email support has been upgraded with iOS 4.2 so that multiple accounts can be used. It is fairly easy to setup in Settings->Mail, Calendar and Contacts. Includes support for Exchange

Btw you have another kidney :)
