Anyone have any ideas how to configure IPCOP properly using PPPoE ?

The initial setup is much the same as smoothwall, but once in the browser interface, I cannot for the life of me figure out why I cannot get a connection - it doesn't even seem to see the modem ?

I've used IPCop (1.4) and smoothwall .. I prefer smoothwall for the mods ... although IPCop has a newer kernel and drivers ... but getting back to your question ... (IPCOp is based on smoothwall)

1) Are you using an USB or Ethernet Modem ? (What make)
if USB - u might get problems with both IPCop and smoothy ...

If ethernet ...

here are the steps .... (I'm including extra steps so if you feel they redundant feel free to skip them but this should sort you out)

1) Use a CLEAN IPCop installation ... ie: if you have modified rc.sysinit or rc.network to stop loading some services .. you might have broken the ppp ...
2) Reset your modem to factory setting ... you should have a reset button on the modem ... just remember to change the modem password just to be on the safe side ...
Most modems default to pass through bridged mode so you should be ok ... if not set your modem to bridged mode ...
3) run setup in IPCop ...
3a) go to networking
3b) Network configuration type (Green + Red)
3c) Assign the cards
3d) Set the IP address information to PPPoE (4th option)
3e) exit setup (saving as you go)

4) Setup your ADSL account under PPP (using PPPoE as interface)
Remember to enable (Require carriage return) and reconnect on reboot ...

5) go back to the home page and make sure that the account you have chosen is there and set to idle ...

6) REBOOT .... they say you don't have to ... but sometimes their service restarts get messed up .. it won’t kill you .. just reboot ...

If all went well your modem should automatically connect after the reboot has completed ...

If not .. please post your PPP log here ...

It's for a Sentech MyWireless modem, not ADSL - thanks anyway.

Eventually got it working, suffered from :-

1. Dodgy HD past it's sell by date finally - old 1gig Seagate
2. Dodgy Install media - it booted and seemed fine, but obviously wasn't, had to reburn
3. Dodgy Tulip NIC - Linux often has problems with these, Davicom/Tulip has given me issues before. Switched out network cards

So, what should've been a 20 minute process of switching from Smoothwall to IPcop turned into 4 hours last night of infuriating anger, resulting in one broken video card (I've got a short fuse right now due to being on a no drink diet) and 1 hour this morning calmly locating different hardware to run IPCOP on.

Also, I found I had to remove all entries from the Modem section except for the timeout which is mandatory.

I'll give it a try over Smoothwall, but there's 2 things I don't like :-

1. During install, you don't get an option to probe for a different network card for the GREEN interface
2. Certificate info popup loads in Firefox for every session that I want to view IPCOP details via a browser, there's probably a way to turn this off in firefox in the certificates section however.

Other than that, I like the interface and there's a load more info than Smoothwall.

Thanks for the info, i'm switching from a windows box to a IPCOP firewall the weekend. I have a few questions about this step.
1. Could you please explain in more detail why step 2 needs to be performed.
2. I upgraded the firmware of the modem, will I lose this if I reset it.
3. How does one set the modem to "bridged mode".

thanks in advance

Sapphiron - I think BlobNow is talking about ADSL modems.

If your using the sentech modem, then follow the same method as BlobNow indicates (smoothwall works just the same)

Once installed, you'll reboot and access your firewall from a browser.

If you chose 192.168.0.1 for your firewall IP, then you would access that via a browser with 192.168.0.1:81 (I think - could be 443)

You would then go into the Modem section and remove everything but the timeout. Then goto the dialup settings, make sure persistent connection is on, use the PPPoE Plugin, put in your sentech username and password in the boxes provided and that's pretty much it.

If IPcop doesn't work for you, try Smoothwall. I wrote a HOWTO in this forum section for that - just do a search for Smoothwall and you'll find it.

You shouldn't loose your new firmware if you reset the modem. If you upgrade your firmware, the new firmware replaces the old.

not quite the same, that step about resetting the modem will cause you a world of problems on a mywi modem, a mywi modem can only use a pppoe connection if the username and pass have been stored on the modem.
Upon reset, the username and pass get deleted.
To store username and pass, connect the modem to windows pc and initiate a connection with sentech dialler or mysignal.

The problems you had with the modem not being seen or attempted to be communicated with, is probably because when changing from usb to ethernet, its required to :
1 : turn off the modem
2 : plug in ethernet cable
3 : Turn modem back on

If you have not stored the pass on the modem, it will attempt a connection, but will fail on authorisation.

Good luck!

Geez .. sorry guys .. I TOTALLY missed the fact that I wasn't in the ADSL forum anymore [:I] [:I]

Resetting Modem - I try this as one of the options if I change settings in the modem setup ... just incase I messed something up ...

Smoothwall over IPCop ...

#1 Diffrent strokes ...
#2 Unplug all cards but the one you want for green during setup ... this will make that one green always .. then after you install .. you can add more cards ...
#3 I would disagree that IPCop has more info .. if you look on the community sites .. the SW site is more more developed although it has a lot more attitude/ego then IPCop

but it's all much of a muchness anyway ... I have posted problems for IPCop on SW site and vice versa ... and as long as you use the product name whose forums you are on .. the answers apply to both ... *usually*

If I remember correctly, Smoothwall is a spinoff from the original IPCop.

FSCK YOU Sentech!! [:(!]

Not! The IPCop guys forked the original smoothwall code. There were HUGE punch-ups when it happened a few years ago. If I remember correctly they forked the code but didn't honour the GPL agreement concerning credits etc.

Mention IPCop on the smoothwall forums and make sure you have flame proof underwear on.

ah..k..my bad [:)]

I just remember one being based on the other

Smoothwall was founded by Richard Morrell and Lawrence Manning, they did give mailing
list support but I think it was Richard in paticular got very upset with and
extremely abrasive with very basic newbie questions clearly covered in the
FAQs and people who wanted him to add all sorts of "features' to the program.
Some of the questions had me shaking my head and I was a very fresh newbie at
the time so I quite understand his point.
IPCop was founde by some people I think from the original group and a few
others who got a little upset with the original team. There was some
accusations flying around for a while on the mailing list but I dont remember
clearly, its been a while. I have used both and for a user there is not much
functional difference.

The Richard guy .. was apparently causing a lot of uphill and wanted to get rid of SW GPL ... but he's gone now so it's all back to normal ... and yes .. smoothwall 1st then came IPCop ... if you look in the IPCop config files you will still find 'smoothwall' in a lot of the comments/descriptions ...

Yeah, IPCop was based on Smoothwall code, but the IPCop guys have been working hard to rid themselves of any of the old Smoothwall code. They're even moving it over to a different distro (LinuxFromScratch) - see the roadmap on their site.

The IPCop mailing list is a really friendly bunch and quite newbie safe.
