mods, please feel free to move this post elsewhere if it'll fit better in some other sub-forum.

A client wants to install IPCop on a Mikrotik RB, not sure which model. Also not sure why he doesn't just go with RouterOS which should already be able to do everything that IPCop does, if I'm not mistaken.

Has anyone tried to do this before, if it's even possible? The system requirements for IPCop are not much, but AFAIK the RB will need to boot from the IPCop CD to start the installation and I dunno if that's possible on a RB?

Any insight appreciated.

If I may ask Sarel, why would you want to put IPcop on a RB?

Not sure, Peon. It's not for me, a client wanted to know how. If it was up to me I'd just run RouterOS on the Mikrotik and install IPCop on a cheap PC or something, like The_Librarian suggested. I guess he might have a spare RB lying around and wanted to use that to install IPCop instead of said cheap PC.

There are a couple of sites that mention work was being done on getting pfsense running on the board but they ran out of cash and it was also a headache.

So I doubt there is anything readily available.

IIRC a minimum Smoothwall install need 64Mb RAM to function properly. (no mods, just plain vanilla).

A Smoothwall with mods installed will need more (anything from 512Mb up to 4096Mb). IPCop (which is a fork of Smoothwall) might be the same, more or less.

So far all my Smoothwalls have 1024Mb RAM and a couple of mods, and everything works fine so far.

I have no idea how much RAM is available on a Mikrotik board.

RB433AH - more or less entry level has 128MB

So not much to work with, RouterOS does a great job with what resources it has available. Not much on the reporting side though, and not as simple to get going with QoS etc.
