Hello all,

I'm starting to plan for the day when I will join the masses of ADSL users, and have gotten some excellent help from tibby.dude thus far. I would like some more opinions / comments / jeering.

I am a Smoothwall (and lately IPCop for home ISDN) user. I want to continue with using either IPCop or Smoothwall when I get ADSL as the mods - such as the bandwidth metering - is quite kewl. Now, I currently do have a 4-port Ethernet / wireless combo router, so I am looking for ye basic ADSL modem that I can plug into my IPCop box - either internal or external.

For those of you that run Smoothwall or IPCop, what modem do you use? I want to go out and buy something that will work. That said, no, I prefer to stay away from the Telcom-supplied Marconi modems. And yes, I've searched the forums, a number of people talking about IPCop and Smoothwall, but no one saying what hardware they are using with it. I could just be blind of course - I blame the excitement of getting ADSL... ;)

I actually got myself a Planet router, spent about an hour trying to configure it to connect, gave up and put it in "bridged" mode, which basically means just a modem and hooked it up to my Smoothie.

I'm now running IPCop instead.

So, you may want to do something similar, because it gives you the best of both worlds - if you want, you can use the built in router, or you can brige it and use smoothwall or IPCop.

Lets face it, a standard DSL modem isn't that much cheaper than a DSL router plus a lot of them seem to be USB based, which you most definately don't want.

I got this one :-

To be honest, I can't say which make is better and the only people who could, would be those that have tried 5 or 6 - best to find a model that suits your pocket and look for online reviews for it.
