Hi guys,

I've been using IPCop at home for about 2-3 years now. Used to use it with an internal PCI ISDN card before I got ADSL. I now run it with a Connexant-based PCI ADSL card....so, I have a bit of experience with it.

Anyway, I need to set up and configure an IPCop machine for a small company, but cannot seem to source a PCI ADSL modem anymore. Seems like nobody is prepared to sell those anymore as they move slowly off the shelves.

I have never used IPCop/Smoothwall with an external modem/router....and need some advice on how to go about doing that...I've never owned an ADSL router, so not to experienced with the subject matter.

Any advice/help/tutorial would be appreciated as I need to do my homework first before I go in there and make an idiot of myself.

I'm not sure of the model number of the router, but I know its a Telkom Wifi Model with a "Do-Broadband" logo on top (if that helps)

Sorry for the noob questions....

thanks in advance people...

Ipcop

Hey its quite simple,

plug a laptop,or pc into router with ethernet cable, make sure you get an IP adress dynamic from the router , should be 10.0.0 range probably 10.0.0.3
check the gateway shouldbe 10.0.0.2 then log onto router by pointing your laptop or pc at http://10.0.0.2
go to lan setup switch DHCP OFF
go to adsl setup put it into bridge mode,
go to lan ip set it to ip adress of 10.129.0.254
save all settings and reboot
now the fun part
grab a spare ipcop box, and your latest ipcop .iso burnt to cd
make bios boot to cdrom
booot up!!
press enter for install
make sure you have preferably two different network cards for easy recognition, ipcop will probe for interfaces (ie nics) internal first as you know is green. set green range ip to 10.129.0.1 submask 255.255.255.0
from the desription of the card (leave ipcop case open) incase "pun make sure you plug the ethernet cable from any port on the SWITCH into the green nic.
setup will ask what configuration choose isdn *disable
choose network type choose * green and red ie: 2 nics only
red setup: choose pppoe and set auto ip adress (from isp)
on dhcp range set 10.129.0.100 - 10.129.0.120 eg
leave dns blank
plug in ethernet cable from RED NIC TO ROUTER

ipcop will complete install and spit out the cd
reboot ipcop, go to plug pc or laptop into SAME SWITCH
go to browser to http://10.129.0.1:445
use the same login deatils as you did in setup, :)
ie admin password
go to adsl setup choose pppoe, not pppoe plugin set your un and pw
name the account at the bottom, tick persistant.
go to top save
if you done it all right you should be online
you might need to enable/disable nic on the laptop or pc to get a new ip from the ipcop.

if this doesnt work or anyone wants to add- please reply {NO FLAMES LOL)
otherwise try http://www.google.co.za (rtfm) :)

regards

I have some Billion PCI ADSL modems in the drawer. Not sure if they will work with IPCop.
Not sure what the chipset on them are.
Can ship you one.

PM me youre address.

Cool - sounds great man ;-)

How much do you want for them? (each). Let me know, I'm in JHB, could drive up to PTA to collect.

Thanks a mil for the time you took to type out this comprehensive response. It is very appreciated! Will give it a shot if I dont manage to source a PCI card from xdluser.

xdluser - thanks a mil for the cards! I am really amazed at your generosity!

Small gltich though - I cant get the cards to work with IPCop - the chipset these cards use is "Eagle" - doesnt seem to be supported (bummer) :(

I tried Smoothwall 3.0 - There is an option to use "Eagle (generic)" cards, but I get an error when trying to connect:

Code:
20:58:47 pppd Couldn't get channel number: Input/output error

I tried Endian .... didnt work either....

I am not installing Smoothwall 2.0 - just for the hell of it (hey, you never know)

Looks like I am gonna have to use an external router with this IPCop/Smoothwall setup. Anybody knows of a router that works 100%?? Dont wanna buy something thats not gonna work....
