iPhone 13 discussions

Apple is now assembling the iPhone 13 in Brazil, but not the iPhone 13 mini

Although the vast majority of Apple products are assembled in China, Apple also uses some of Foxconn’s facilities in countries like Brazil and India to assemble iPhones. Now the company has started assembling the iPhone 13 in Brazil, but there’s a catch – it seems that the iPhone 13 mini will not have a local production.

9to5Mac reader João Menicucci recently bought an iPhone 13 in Brazil. To his surprise, the box indicates that the product was “Assembled in Brazil.” The model number, MLPF3BR/A, confirms that the device was indeed assembled in the country, as the units sold in Brazil that are imported from China have the identifier “BZ/A” instead.

However, for some unknown reason, it seems that only the 6.1-inch iPhone 13 is being assembled at Foxconn Brazil, located in Jundiai, São Paulo.

MacMagazine has found out that Apple updated the iPhone 13 documentation at ANATEL (the Brazilian telecom regulator) on January 24, 2022 to include Foxconn Brazil as a manufacturing facility for the product. The documents also confirm that neither the iPhone 13 mini nor the 13 Pro models will be assembled in Brazil.

To be fair, Apple has never assembled any Pro models of the iPhone in Brazil, probably because they are much more expensive and only a few people buy these models in emerging countries – but more affordable models like the iPhone SE and iPhone 11 were already being assembled in Brazil.

It’s interesting to see that Apple has decided to scrap the iPhone 13 mini from its local assembly plans. Perhaps the company knows that the mini version has low demand, no matter the efforts to make it more affordable, or this is just an indication that the iPhone 13 mini will be officially discontinued later this year.

The iPhone did pretty well in global sales for 2021. 7 of the top 10 sellers were iPhones.

I’m always drawn to how the Pro Max iPhones sell, because for a long time reviewers have seemingly alluded to the fact that those models are not meant for “the average user” (does such a thing even exist these days?)
Yet we see 12 Pro Max at #2 and then the 13 Pro Max entering at #9 despite the short time it was on sale for in 2021, the margins that Apple make on the Pro Max range must be incredible given the sales vs. pricing.

Also another thing about Pro Max is that they have become bigger as well as more and more hefty in hand, yet it seems buyers don’t mind at all. A friend of mine held my 11 Pro Max sometime last year and exclaimed how heavy it was for them (he had a OnePlus 7T at the time), fast forward to today, he bought himself and his wife 13 Pro Maxes, both very happy with them to, lol.

I wonder how much bigger and heavier the market is willing to take
Or will we in 2-3 years time see a migration back to smaller iPhones?

I’m quite happy with the size and weight of the 13 Pro Max and I am hoping the 14 Pro Max doesn’t exceed that too much, if it does I hope it has a more gentle design (rounder edges), it must not become unwieldy.

Most people put their phone in a case, rendering the sharp edges largely irrelevant.

If you don’t like the edges of the 12 and 13 series, just use something like the Dbrand Grip case that I’m using. Edges are comfortably rounded and super grippy.

Bought my mom an iPhone 13 Pro Max in silver yesterday. Wow, I hugely prefer it over my blue colour. My next iPhone is a silver one for sure.

Some random information...

I have the space grey 13 Max. All my iPhones have been space grey, but apparently the silver colour is pure stainless steel, so there is no anodised coating on the stainless steel to give it a colour.

This comes in handy if you start to get light scratches on the stainless steel frame. On the silver models, you can polish them back to a mirror finish using stainless steel polish, as it's the bare stainless steel itself - there is no anodised coating. If you do this with any other colour, you'll wear the coating off - so you're pretty much stuck with scratches on the frame on all colours except the silver model.

Silver is the winner.

How is battery life on the Pro's?

More reports coming out that the iPhone 14 will be basically an iPhone 13 with a better camera and upgraded Ram

Battery life is good, although it depends on your usage. Standby time is great though. I lose 1-3% overnight... although weak WiFi or cellular reception seems to eat away at standby time, sometimes eating up as much as 5-6% overnight.

There is a bug with music streaming on iOS 15 which seems to significantly drain battery. Apple acknowledged this bug, but months later - we are still waiting for a fix.

On my daily commute to work I get significant drain on music streaming. Watching Netflix / YouTube videos uses a fraction of the power that streaming music does. The problem persists on iOS 15.5.

Other than the music bug, I can easily get two days on my 13 Max with light usage. A full day with heavy usage though. I never have to top up during the day. I don't game on my phone though.

Two days if no App is running or two days when the phone is off

With “regular” use. I’m not a teenager, so don’t sit with my phone glued to my hand all day, and average around 4hrs of screen time total per day. Screen brightness is on half (no auto), and I have Dark Mode kicking in when the sun goes down. These aren’t to save the battery in anyway, merely preference, but I’m sure they certainly help a little.
