Apple explains why the iPhone 16e doesn't have MagSafe

The recently unveiled iPhone 16e doesn't have MagSafe, and Apple has already explained that this has nothing to do with the use of its first in-house developed modem. So why did it happen?

Well, Apple says it decided not to equip the iPhone 16e with MagSafe because "most people in the 16e's target audience exclusively charge their phones by plugging them into a charging cable". This statement allegedly comes from unnamed "Apple representatives" speaking to Daring Fireball's John Gruber.

Those representatives go on to claim that these people, the ones who are going to buy the iPhone 16e, "tend to not use inductive charging at all". How Apple came to this conclusion is unclear. Who Apple thinks these people are - also unclear.

They must have surveyed / surveilled my kids and their friends - none of them want a wireless charger

I figured out why eventually - 'cos they can't let go of the damn things even to charge them - lay around on beds and couches with their phones while plugged in - drives me up the wall 'cos they fxck up the cables and the charging ports in the process

It truly fascinates me how obsessed people get with the Battery Health, lol, doing all sorts of things to keep it high and what I have seen over and over again is that it is truly a gamble that also depends on how close your iPhone (or any smartphone) battery was to the Design capacity when you got it.

Some people get devices that were like 1-2% over design capacity and within a few short months will be crying when it drops to 99% and they begin panicking (Macrumours is inundated with these sort of posts and threads), then you will get someone who’s phone had like 10-20% over Design capacity and they sit at 100% battery health for many months, even a full year without a drop…then it drops and tumbles almost consistently sometimes for a few weeks or months:ROFL: 99%…3 weeks later, 98%…a month later 97%…this continues then it gets to some number like 95% and sits there for many months. Lol!

I have concluded that there is no gaming this system, my 15 Pro Max is a year old, sitting at 95% health with 374 charge cycles, other people are at ~200-250 and sitting at the same or even less battery health.

I just charge when I want, let that thing hit 100% however many times a day, sometimes I keep it plugged in on its kickstand because I like using Standby Mode.

iPhone 16 was the best-selling phone of Q1 2025

Apple and Samsung dominated the top-ten best-selling phones list according to the latest Counterpoint Research report. The two brands accounted for nine out of the top ten best-sellers, with Xiaomi being the only other brand featured in the rankings.

The iPhone 16 was the best-selling device for the first three months of the year, marking a return for the baseline iPhone model for the first time since 2023. The device fared particularly well across the Middle East and Africa region as well as Japan, where it recorded its highest growth.

The 16 Pro Max came in second, followed by the 16 Pro in third place. The 16 Pro series models accounted for nearly half of Apple’s total iPhone sales during the Q1 period.
