iPhone 2.1 Download (without iTunes)

I'm sorry to create yet ANOTHER iTunes thread, but if there is a solution to my problem, then the next person seeking the same answers won't have to trawl through the other threads which are reaching hundreds of pages.

My brother-in-law got an iPhone on Monday, but unfortunately he's in 56k dial-up. I gave him iTunes 8, and predictably, as soon as he plugged his phone in, it prompted him to download the 280MB 2.1 update....

My question is, does someone have a link where I can download the update for him, and then dump it in his iTunes folder so that he can update his phone?

Downloading it now... 238MB... Slightly smaller than I recall iTunes reporting... You sure this is the one?
 
Pretty sure it is the right file. Found this on the Apple Discussion forums "To download again 2.1 software, Remove your existing software under ~/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Update/ Firmware file is iPhone1,2_2.1_5F136_Restore.ipsw and should be 249341655 bytes."
I am guessing maybe the one app is dividing by 1000 to get MB and the other using 1024.

I got my 1st Gen 2.1 firmware from that site/link.
 
While this all sounds like a rather un-elegant approach to me the real shocker is the 238MB firmware. Eish - and I thought 120MB for modern Symbian devices was a bit bloated...
 
BTW: You don't have to copy the file into a special folder in iTunes. If you hold shift when you click the restore button you can pick a firmware file from disc (for some odd reason you have to be online even if you want to use a local file).

That's correct, and on a mac it's the option key.

iPhone uses a modern UI and operating system, what were you expecting a 10MB download for the OS? :rolleyes:

Forgot to mention that you can download the firmwares using local bandwidth.

Mmmm, that is a tuff call, but I would go with the 10MB one if it has true multitasking ability, working bluetooth, mms, video..... you get my drift :p Come to think of it you can have all of those (except multitasking) with a 40MB Series40 OS....
 
Rouxenator, why are you on here? Can't you just leave iPhone owners alone? Promise we won't intrude on your Nokia N82 thread.

Well then you stick to your non-modern interface while I enjoy my modern UI.

In case you did not know this, Apple's download servers make use of AKAMAI which means I can download the 300MB file using my local ADSL account and this will only cost me a few cents, no loss to me.

Thanks once again to all. Just to let you know, MikeCTZA's URL worked 100% and my bro-in-law is up and running with 2.1.
