Iphone 3G Bought in Dubai not picking up network

My father in law bought a 3G iPhone in Dubai while he was living there. The guy he bought it from assured him it was "unlocked for international".

It worked fine with one the overseas Sim cards, but he has now moved back here and when he puts in his local sim the phone doesn't pick up any network.

Any ideas as to what i could do to fix it ? Was thinking about resetting it and trying to activate it again. Or will jailbreaking the phone sort out the problem?

Or is it a paperweight?

U can unlock the baseband. Should be a couple of apps out there that will do it for u. If u cant, i will buy it off you.
 
Yeah that happened with the old jailbreaking if the baseband wasn't unlocked properly.

Download the 3.1.2 ipsw, restore it and unlock with Blacksn0w.
 
Firstly, the phone should be unlocked so no need to do anything there, as per this URL: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1937 - phones from UAE are not network locked.
Have you tried SIMs from only one carrier?
I would update iTunes to the latest and then download the 3.1.2 firmware and update to that ( either from within iTunes or get it from http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/ )
Jailbreaking isn't needed if you just want to use the iPhone as such, you only need that if you want to do more mods to the device.

Yes, only tried MTN sim in the device. I have a 3Gs and my mtn sim works fine.

Thanks for the advice, will try and upgrade the software and see from there - was just hesitant to do that as the guy in Dubai told my father in law not to upgrade the software or it wouldn't work!

Well .... that could be if the phone was then bought elsewhere and into UAE. Just guessing. Good luck and hope you get sorted out.
 
An update : - Seems that the phone is already jailbroken. I noticed it had Cydia installed. I see that Yellowsn0w is listed there, but when i go into it, it offers me the option of installing it. I get an error when i try and install it. I also get an error if i try and uninstall it. I also get an error if i try to add the address to the source.

So many errors....i think i am going to Jailbreak the phone on the 3.0 os and see from there....Hopefully it works.
 
It's working. Jailbroken on OS 3.0 and unlocked with ultrasn0w.

can sum1 tel me how to unlock my iphone 3G after i jailbreaked it with blackra1n

it just shows "no service" and the phone part of the iphone doesnt seem to work.

RE-DOWNLOAD Blackra1n from Blackra1n.com. The new one has the unlock. Then once jailbroken go into the app on your iphone and choose black sn0w
