My 3 year old 3G is stuck in restore mode. It is not jailbroken. When restoring from iTunes 10.4.1.10 on Windows it gives error 28, then 14 then seemed to carry on with a successful restore. I left it overnight to finish syncing my apps, music etc. This morning it was back in restore mode.

I have not yet been able to find advice that is guaranteed to work, only many other people with a similar issue.

It seems from other postings on the web that it may be a hardware problem.

Being a 3G model, it is out of warranty and paying Vodacom for a replacement model is not an option.

Any other suggestions for a fix or someone in Gauteng I can take it to who will charge me a reasonable fee to get it fixed?

PS. I plan to upgrade to iPhone 5 the moment it is launched locally, but who knows when that's going to be.

I asked someone & they said:

Try an app called TinyUmbrella (double check spelling), it will take it out recovery mode. If that don't work then you might as well try a jailbreak. If both fail then you probably have a hardware issue.

Good Luck

Thanks, I'll give Tinyumbrella a shot.

What is your preferred method/resource for jailbraking an iPhone 3G?

You can try the redsn0w version of 4.2.2. You might be able to get 4.3.2 but not sure if that supports 3G.

Not quite sure why it worked, but I'm thankful it did. I did the firmware restore on a different PC and the content restore on the original PC. All seems fine now.
