The iPhone 3G is showing signs of doing to the cellular industry what the ipod did to the music industry. Revolutionise and re-energise.

Unfortunately, the iPhone in the box is only the brain, a clean slate to carve your individuality on, and most people judge it’s performance on this untouched state. However, even though what the iPhone has to offer out of the box is awesome, it’s the personalizing that sets the iPhone apart.

An explanation doesn’t do the iPhone 3G justice, so visit apple.com and watch the videos. There’s the full PDA functionality – internet, push email, calender, phone, sms – plus the full ipod video functionality, camera, Youtube, maps and more. But when you make the iPhone an extension of your workday or personality, the possibilities are endless.

The App Store allows you to find any handy little app that will make your life easier, and with 3000 apps and growing, you are sure to find what you are looking. For example, my wife loves her to-do lists, recipes and birthdays.

A few taps later and she has the apps she needs. I on the other hand installed remote, which allows me to use my phone to control iTunes over our wi-fi network. No more running into the house to change songs or turn up the volume – I just use the phone. Then there’s Stage Hand for controlling keynote presentations.

Tilt the iPhone to landscape mode to see what’s on the projector screen, and with a swipe of the finger the slide changes. Or point to something on the iPhone and it is spotlighted on the projected slide. Tilt it back to profile and you can keep an eye on your notes. Filemagnet lets me drag and drop documents, files, pictures or anything else I need to carry around onto my phone. I could go on…

Then there’s MobileMe, Apple’s super-syncing option that boosts an already fabulous gadget. MobileMe uses cloud computing to allow subscribers to store 20GB of info. As an iPhone owner, using MobileMe means that you can store all your emails, contacts, calendar events or even photos.

Best of all, with two iPhones a Macbook, Mac-Mini and normal PC in the house, should I change a calendar event, contact telephone number or photo on any one of these devices, the other 4 are automatically synced within 15 minutes. No more double booking dinner dates!

The iPhone still has a way to go though. MMS and Video recording are only available through Cydia, the install program available to those brave enough to hack their phones. Bluetooth doesn’t work with non-Apple devices. No sms forwarding, and you can’t send contact details as a business card. However, Apple seem to have plenty faith in email, and with 3G now standard, many people are willing to overlook this.
