Ok, so Apple said the South African release date for the iPhone 3GS (iPhone 3G S) is 9 July. Vodacom said in a press release, but nowhere on their site, it would be out in July.

So my question is, where the hell is it? I'll bet the official Vodacom comment will be "We need time to test it on our network." Because of course the 3GS is a completely different phone to the 3G. New software, new hardware, proprietary Apple GSm chipset, Russian made 50 Calibre built into the earpiece... Oh wait! Its the same as the 3G.

Any ideas? Any official statements?

All I have seen so far from Vodacom is this: http://www.hellopeter.co.za/the_comment.php?id=291000&company=Vodacom&industryId=&happiness=

I have been very optimistic about the iPhone so far in SA, but it seems operators just fail to recognize a market, and treat it like any run of the mill Nokia or Samsung.

From zero to top selling smart phone in a year. Biggest range of apps, a new standard for mobile browsing and websites. Yep, there is no market.

I think it is because our operators pander to the lowest common denominator, the Pay-as-you-go crowd where they don't have any bad debt and hardly have to subsidise phones. So if an opportunity arises to actually improve or be a market leader, why bother? "We can sit on our asses and watch the money roll in."

I don't know if you have browsed around hellopeter.com, but it is probably an even battle for most complaints when it comes to telecoms.

OK, maybe not by actual count, but 50 000 apps accessible from one place? I had a Sony Ericsson P800, P900, P910 and installed 2 apps on them in 6 years. I had an iMate SP5 and an HTC S620, same story. 1 golf app, which sucked and a currency app.

My iPhone... I have installed about 30 apps, in 9 months. And I don't have to fiddle with my registry to get them to work.

Anyway, still nothing from Vodacom on the release date whizzing past without so much as a whimper?

This is ridiculous, we should post like 20 complaints on hellopeter lol

If you have a look at some of the Vodacom Rep replies on the hellopeter website, you will see the following:

- The official Apple release date for SA is "July '09", and NOT the 9th July. If you also look at the original Apple slide, that was shown at the presentation, you will see that it is "July '09".

- Apparently Vodacom is only receiving stock in early August '09.

- It takes about a week or so to get the stock through Customs.

Therefore, we can expect actual stock to be available in week 2 / 3 of August.

BUT: Vodacom needs to COME TO THE PARTY here ... update their website ... get some marketing information out to the public ... allow us to pre-order ... stop pissing off their clients !!!!!

:-/

I agree! Vodacom should do a lot more!

Fair enough, I see it is July '09. However, the lack of communication by Vodacom? Not acceptable. Only available in August? Not acceptable.

Sooo, its the end of July... And no word from Vodacom. I wonder if the other countries that were supposed to get a July '09 release have got their phones?

Ummm, I think your comment is in the wrong thread. This thread was started 9 July. Those other two, 18th and 22nd. So maybe your comment should be sending people this way...

Sorry to all those unnecessarily misplaced electrons.

Well, they're now taking orders if you want to buy the units separately. Unfortunately the people setting the prices didn't consider the economic client. If you're not careful, they'll quote you 5 digits for a 16GB 3Gs.
