I'm due for an upgrade from the end of this month, and i'm very torn at this point between the iPhone and the new Nokia X6 to be released internationally on the 16th November and hopefully here not too long after.

As a long time Nokia user, i'm quite looking forward to see what this phone is like when its put up against the iphone.

Any comments to make my decision easier would be appreciated.:)

iPhone 3GS without a doubt. Its a no brainer! Sleek, sexy, powerful like you cant imagine, with a plethora of apps that will drive you mad! Stable and so easy to use!

Best gadget (note I dont say phone) i've ever bought! Hands down!

I'd go with the X6, last I heard(and this was a while back) the bluetooth on the iPhone can only be used for headsets, not data transfer-because apple thinks everyone has email- granted, you can use your fingers like some demented gynecologist to open pictures on the iPhone.. But I'm a gadget freak, so features features features!

The X6 has 5MP camera also..

The bluetooth on the iphone is still only used for headsets, the feature sets of both phones are very similar, the nokia has the better camera for sure, but then the iphone has a much faster processor with hardware acceleration which the nokia doesn't.

The more i break the pros and cons down, the more confused i get LOL.

I'd like to hear from some people who own iphones about their experiences with their devices, are you able to use all of the iphones features here in SA?, i.e itunes and appstore etc.

I wouldn't be worried about the slightly slower CPU in the Nokia. Remember, Symbian was built for mobile devices from the ground up and is very mature when compared to MacOS mobile.

Think about it this way: what do you like about Nokia? Good call quality, battery life, reliability? It is a phone after all, and those are the things I look for first. Also keep in mind that you will be able to flash the Nokia with the latest firmware without any problems. With the iPhone you still have to jailbreak it to use the hardware to its full potential, which will cause problems once you want to update.

Final one - backups. If, heaven forbid, something should happen to your phone and you have to format or get a replacement, Nokia PC Suite allows you to restore everything in two clicks over USB or Bluetooth.

The x6 uses symbian s60v5 just like the nokia 5800 and n97.

I've got a 5800 as a second phone.

Really cool features, and when it does work it's a joy, but even with the latest firmware it's a dinosaur compared to the fluidity of the iphone.

Go with the 3gs.

So far its 3 - 2 to the nokia....

another thing i've noticed here and on other forums is that the guys with the Iphones are almost always very happy with them and rarely have anything to complain about, despite some of the phones obvious shortcomings.
The Nokia camp however is never really as enthusiastic rather stating facts and features rather than an overall user experience.....makes one wonder.

i presume that the phone will support "comes with music" as per this report (MTN only).

Thats a very good point, all x6's should come with "comes with music", which means unlimited downloads from the Nokia music store for a whole year.

It just doesn't get any easier to make a choice..

PS: There are Apps available for the iPhone that allow you to transfer files via Bluetooth and share with older bluetooth devices...

I havent tested only seen the apps.

On a better a note. As said early in the above posts. I am more than delighted with my iphone. I am ecstatic. Purely for 1 feature. The overall fluidity of the phone. Its a realy pleasure to use.

i have tested a few of those bluetooth apps.. they work pretty sweet - altho remember the iphones filesystem is different, so you can send / receive pics and open them - but music didnt work.. could be the app at the stage when i tested..

but the thing with the iphone is there are always new/newer apps coming out.. and of course ease of use, seemless integration into MS exchange etc..

but tbh the main point is the amount of APPS u get for iPhone

iPhone!

Why would you even compare these two? X6, N97, 5800 all the same, all crap, N97 mini will be a better bet, new OS might be better then iPhone, but so far, iPhone wins, btw if a phone is released internatinally on whatever day, it takes 3 - 4 months to get to SA.

Not worth the wait, enjoy your iPhone!;)

Indeed, JK8, why bother comparing, when the Nokia clearly manufactures the superior phones. If Veyron786 decides on any S60-based Nokia he can basically take the phone out of the box, download any Symbian or Java app and run it on his phone. This without having to wait for Apple to rubber stamp every single app.

Nokia doesn't lock you in and force you to use the phone in a way that they dictate... they leave the choice up to the user, without you having to jailbreak it first. A SIP client is built into the latest E and Nseries, taking two button presses to select the Internet call option and making a call over WiFi.

Veyron786, give both phones a test run before deciding. See which feels better in your hand and has a more intuitive (to you, anyway) interface. I'd just like to say that I wouldn't take an iPhone after reading about all the cases of exploding and overheating phones over the past year. For me, boring and reliable works much better. Still have a 5110 and 6600 that went for a swim - both working 100%.

I had the pleasure of playing with the X6, N97 Mini, N900 and the E72.

Firstly, the N900 is something else but with regards to the X6 vs the iPhone 3GS I'd go for the X6. Firstly in SA it's going to be a "Comes with music" device meaning unlimited music for a year and secondly the Ovi Store has a lot of potential to bring some amazing content to Nokia phone's. I do think Nokia dropped the ball two or so years ago but they're definitely on the rise.

The screen on the X6 is oh so nice

As a longtime diehard nokia fan, I must say that I don't think they can currently compete in the touchscreen-smartphone arena. While they still make great phones like the E71, symbian just doesn't cut it anymore in the touchscreen market. If you're someone who appreciates the kind of quality and no-frills usability Nokia used to stand for, and you're hell bent on a touchscreen phone, there are only 3 realistic considerations: Iphone, Android and Windows Mobile.
If apps are your thing and you're not worried about multitasking, Iphone is your best bet. Good quality hardware too. If customisation and multitasking are important, check out an Android handset like the HTC Hero (or upcoming Acer Liquid). Windows Mobile has become a bit of a cussword, especially amongst smug Iphone owners, but it has a strong developer support in the form of xda-developers.com, and the new Touch HD2 (+-R8000 at expansys.co.za, should be out on vodacom early next year also) currently blows anything, including the iphone, completely out of the water hardware-wise. Unless the Acer Liquid releases soon or HTC releases an HD2-spec Android phone, I'm probably gonna upgrade to the Touch HD2, in spite of windows mobile. HTC has done a great job of covering up WM 6.5 with their awesome Sense UI.

My two cents, hope you're happy with whatever you end up choosing. Ultimately, only you will know which phone is best for you. Best of luck!

I have in fact been keeping the HTC HD2 in the back of my mind also, its an awesome phone from what i can see, its a big on the huge side but actually thinner than both the iphone and X6. Also it looks like its the first phone to be compatible with windows mobile 7 once its released. i guess i'll give it another two months or so and wait and see how all these new products perform when the reviews start coming out.

Heres my 2c:

I've only had experience with nokia, htc, samsung and sony-ericsson phones. I value clear calls, easy sms messaging (i prefer alphanumeric T9), speedy response and a decent camera with enough storage space and good long battery life. The best experience I've had has to be with nokia although I really liked my SE P990i's call quality and camera, but its UI response was to slow due to too little RAM. I'm not sure how clear iphone calls are or how good its signal quality is.

What about the Palm pre/storm 2 as an alternative? Anyone know when they gonna be launched locally? Keen to hear opinions of people locally who have played with a pre.

I use the sip client alot from the first N80 internet edition, it works well but i was in europe last month and had a WM6 phone which sucks at voip and an Iphone 3G decided to try out the iphone at and what can I say amazing amazing, simple simple. Not that the Nokia is not simple but try connecting to wifi with the two systems and see for yourself which is simpler. Getting me an iphone 3G's as I type

Also not sure if the n series supports voip anymore (e series does) the last I checked on N96 no internet calls

You havent used the iPhone have you, reading about the "bad" stuff isnt the same as using the phone. I know theres alot of iPhone haters and Nokia fans out there. But give credit where its due, the iPhone is superior, as for apps, dont worry about it, theres millions and millions all far better than Symbian, even Nokia have given up on Symbian, I guess you a fan.

I havent used he X6 but I have the N97 and 5800. They useless. Lol at reliable, when last have you used a Symbian, lemme gues you gonna name them one by, I assure Ive used more Symbian phones than you have.
If its the DRM issue(which shouldnt be) why not go for the HTC Hero? Open sourced easily, open the box and you have the whole of Google to download.

Cool whered you get your hands on those phones??? Apart from the E72.
Those phones arent even released world wide.
I agree come with Music is a nice offer, the only trump card over the iPhone.
The OVI store offers apps that I had on K750 in 2006, hardly anything to brag about.
