Soooo... I got my iPhone 4 yesterday and did not want to use it, untill i get myself to protect it, so i went to iStore and bought myself the bumber case + the front and back screen protecters, and it was a mission to put those things on without having bubbels on your screen, so i got frustrated and chuck them away, because after alot of struggle it got dust on it.

So now i am sitting with my brand new iPhone 4 just with the bumber on.. So my question is, is the front and back protecters realy needed?

The glass on the iPhone 4 is the strongest ever and very much scratch resistant. Just keep the bumper on when leaving it on hard surfaces.

Sweeeet thanks, so no need for those screen protectors? Currently i just use the bumber.

I don't use screen protectors either - just make sure you don't put it down on a hard surface and make sure you don't carry keys in the same pocket as your iPhone ;)

Shot dude, no i will never come over myself doing that, my iPhone own its own pocket :P

Those screen protectors are a real bitch to apply.. Apparently you can re-use them though by keeping the plastic bit that came with them.

You wash both palstic backing and the cover, put them back together, squeeze out water, let it dry, and it's like brand new. Not so easy though or I just don't have enough patience.

With regards to the iPhone 4 being really scratch resistant it is most definitely NOT as scratch resistant as the 2G/3G/3GS screens.

Heck, I would even take a sharp knife and impress my friends by scratching it against my older iPhone's screens.. I wouldn't dare do that with the iPhone 4 though...Within the first week or so of having the iPhone 4 I had a scratch on the front, and I take the utmost care of my phones.

I still to this day do not have 1 scratch on my 2G or 3GS screens and I've had those for years now... So the iPhone 4 screen is definitively not as scratch resistant in my observations, and many others on the net.

So I would recommend a screen protector, specifically the anti-glare one, even though they are a pain to install

Its a pain in the but to get those things on without dust getting in, and then the bubbels offcourse :( so i gave up and only got the bumber on.

I bought one of those and only managed to keep the front protector on for 4 days before taking it off. It makes the screen feel leathery and sticky to touch. It also causes your fingers to sort of skip over the screen when you are scrolling or pinching to zoom. The only useful thing of that product is the back protector, which I’ve left on for now. It stops the phone from sliding off uneven surfaces. I really wouldn’t recommend it.

If you are still unsure, go read the reviews on Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/ZAGG-invisibleSHIELD-Apple-iPhone-Full/dp/B003QXNA28) about that product, which I should have done.

It takes time for the screen protector to settle in.
When you apply you usually have a few small bubbles.
They will dissapear after a few days.
mines is like a second skin, you dont even know its on there.
Oh and dont get a matte cover, thats the one that feels leathery and sticky.

Get a smooth one.

Nah, the matte "anti-glare" ones are much smoother I find and help a CRAP load with fingerprints and glare. Looks really good on.

The invisibleshield that hschutte mentioned is not matte afaik and that's teh rubbery one.

I recommend the iFrogz Screen Protector (Anti-Glare) that I have on my iPhone 4; comes with 3 in a pack in case you mess any up. Really happy with it, almost as much as the anti-glare one I had on my 2G'

You can get em for R199 from Vodacom shop, or R139 if you shop around like me ;) (found them at a small tv/electronic shop by Cresta, bottom floor)

I used to use screen protectors on all my previous generation iPhones (3) and iPod touches. However, after watching numerous you tube videos, where guys take keys, knives, coins and try their best to scratch the screen - and always fail.....I never bother with a screen protector anymore. My current one year old 3GS has never had a screen protector on - and if I clean and buff the screen now, and look as carefully as I can, I see no scratch at all...not even the smallest surface scratch, it still looks new. The glass that they use is extremely durable. However, on the 3GS, their plastic backs do pick up scuffs - but those can be replaced. I now haven't bothered with a screen protector on my iPad either.

However, even having watched the youtube video's, I still take care and make sure there are no coins or other metal objects in the same pocket as my iPhone

It's quite strange, but I've noticed that almost nobody in the UK uses bumpers/protectors on their phones. It's only here in SA that we do... I've had my 4 for about 2 weeks, no case and so far not a single scratch. I don't get too bothered about a ding here or there, I prefer a slim phone that fits neatly in my pocket than a bulky case. And it's insured so there's my peace of mind...

@surfs-up
@hammell

See my second last post (the long one)

I agree on my 3GS and 2G etc I've had not one scratch on the screen, and even taken a knife to those myself; but the iPhone 4 is much more susceptible to scratches from my experience. It was within the first week or so I got a scratch on the iPhone 4 screen and I had taken the utmost care.

So if anything I'd recommend a screen protector

I don't use a bumper either - prefer using a phone n@ked ;) I do have a Crumpler slip-in case for protection though ;)

My 2 yo son finds the phone extremely easy to navigate, I definitely suggest that you get 1 if you have little kids!
