Hi, I'm losing airtime on my iPhone4 Contract MTN Anytime 200 at about 2cents per 10 minutes. I've disabled all automatic notifications and location services but somehow i'm still losing airtime. I dont even use the apps (like facebook etc). i've lost like 10mb of data since yesterday and I swear i only went on FB like 10min yesterday.

Am i missing somthing or what?

If you Sync email disable any "Push and Fetch" settings as well..

I had that problem with my iPhone 4 too. Didn't ever manage to solve it. Annoying thing is even if you're in a wifi area, the phone's set to disable wifi to preserve battery life after a certain amount of time of inactivity, so the phone ends up using the cell network data to do all push activity anyway.

THINK i got it sorted now. disabled everything that's got to do with data transfer/usage even my mail account(gmail). airtime stayed the same in the last hour

thanx

I just disable 3G and cellular data when data funds are tight and make use of Wifi wherever possible.

Make sure to close all packages that is running even though you do not need it to run. Do this by double clicking the home buttom. All open packages will appear at the bottom. Hold on to the one until the x appears in the top right corner. Close all packages. This will also show the packages (apps) that run and you can try to identify the bad app. Normally jailbroken phones will give this problem.

that doesn't kill push notifications.
to kill that, go to settings > notifications and turn the master toggle off.

The same thing happens to me on my BB.. I lose about 50cents a day doing nothing.. And I pay for Blackberry Internet Service..

iPhone does send data like the location data to Apple (Location is anonymous and only twice a day)

...

You would have to be insane to say "oh its anonymous and its only twice a day"...

How does apple manage to do things so invasive and yet be so successful?

I guess most people just don't care.

Because all phones with GPS does it from Microsoft to Android and Apple. If you are so concerned about your locational details you should not use a Cell phone at all as even your SP records this data and can be recovered by anyone with a subpena.

Why would any of those companies receive the data from your GPS? This is the first time I've heard of something like this.

A subpoena is a different matter entirely.

Edit: A few things I found with a quick google:

Strangely, Apple does not appear to be directly transmitting the data to a central location, so it’s unclear why exactly its storing it locally. The decision to track and store a users' location in a local file is highly unusual. Mr. Warden and Mr. Allan searched for similar code in Google Inc.'s (GOOG) open source smart phone/tablet operating system, Android, but could not find one.

States Mr. Warden, "Alasdair has looked for similar tracking code in [Google's] Android phones and couldn't find any. We haven't come across any instances of other phone manufacturers doing this."

Seems like it has gathered a lot of attention.

Android is opt out. When you set up the phone on 1st use it ask you if you are willing to send the data.
Microsoft does this whenever the Location service is turned on and explained here
Apple has a file on the phone that store a limited number of location based data that it uploads twice a day.

The uses for it differ from targeted advertizing as in Apple and Android claims, to Apple's statement that they use it to give the phone the ability to lock onto towers faster.

This is an old argument and has been discussed to death already esp when it came to light that Apple kept all the data on the device since its been turned on, changed now to a limited number in an update.

Again if you are so concerned about the data, dont get an Smart Phone as they all do it :)

Boeta B, did you not get an 150MB data bundle with your iPhone4 Contract MTN Anytime 200 contract?

I'll leave it there then, since it has been discussed to death.

I'll get myself an android, then I can opt out ;)

The old iPhone vs everyone else debate... it's a fact, iPhone has the best platform with iOS. :p
