Assuming iPhone4S price gets dropped once iPhone5 gets released locally.

So, is it viable device until iPhone 5S/6/whatever comes out? .

Well considering that the 3GS is still going strong, I think its fairly safe to assume that it will be more than fine...

Viable for what? You can still make a call with your moms old Nokia 1610 if you need to. Do you expect providers to move away from 2G/3G completely? Do you expect Eskom to start making electricity that can only charge latest generation phones and not archaic ones like to old 4S? Do you expect Edgars to start selling shirts with selective pockets, in which any phone shorter than the iPhone 5 would simply fall out? Do you expect your friends to start laughing at you for having a 4S? (that might actually be possible).

The iPhone 4S is a nice phone, and will continue doing whatever you need it to do.

Vodacom CEO says a price hike is on the cards for the iPhone in South Africa

The iPhone 5 will cost more than the iPhone 4S does today when it launches in South Africa, newly appointed Vodacom CEO, Shameel Joosub, said in an interview broadcast on YouTube today (26 September 2012).

I'm with SuperJakes. +1

By all accounts the iphone 5

1. is faster. That is important if you play games on your phone, I guess. If you use it as a phone and a pocket computer, the 4S will serve you well for years to come. Judging by Apple's past record, you should be getting OS upgrades for the next three years, and after that you can jailbreak it.

2. has LTE. That is finally coming closer for us in SA, but there still is a lot of confusion which cellco will work on which frequency. Give it a year to shake out.

3. has an extra row of icons. OK

4. is a looker. If that is important to you, then wait. We understand, really.

5. is being reported to have problems with quick diagonal swipes (this just came out this weekend). Yes, it will get fixed, but why be an early adopter, a.k.a. unpaid beta tester?

I actually got my 4S just two months ago. Then when my wife's upgrade came up, we got her one as well. It's an incredible piece of tech. My general rule is never to buy v1.0 of anything (this rule does not apply to freebies!). Stay slightly behind the curve and your life will be a lot easier.

There's always sense in buying the newer model as Apple will probably continue supporting it longer. However, they are the one company where I would consider buying an older device when prices drop (or second hand).

Apple's model seems to be:
- Flagship device, $200-$300 with contract in the US
- Previous generation device, $100 on contract in the US
- Older device, free on contract (once again, in the US)

This would say that the two previous generations are "safe" in that they will receive upgrades. Since Apple releases phones about once a year, you would be able to buy a new device now and use it for 2-3 years, a second generation device and use it for 1-2 years etc.

This is assuming that you want updates to the OS. Most apps would typically support the previous 1 or 2 generations IOS, I would say, so as long as your device supports IOS4/IOS5 at the moment you should be fine (I'm making assumptions here).

The speed of the devices are a concern - while the 3GS might support IOS6 it doesn't mean it will run it smoothly. I have a 4s (buttery smooth) while my wife has a iPhone 4 - much less smooth. Both on IOS6. My iPad on IOS 5 is getting seriously slow, while my wife's iPad 2 on IOS6 is still relatively smooth.

4s is the better buy by a mile if you consider all the accessories available for the older docking port.

Interesting responses, thanks everyone! I'm leaning towards 4S as upgrade by end of year. Let's see what comes by then...
