iPhone 4S in SA

R 10,899.00 for a 16GB, no thanks. Bunch of rip-offs.

That's crazy man. I means it $649 unlocked in the states. What margins are these guys making.

$649 for the iphone 4s, where? the cheapest I found was $799, and that works out to around R9k landed

629 CAD $ for the 16GB. Works out to what? Just under 5k?
In the UK its 499£, R6100 or what ever.

Cant bekieve igear is selling it for that price. I expected something like 8-9k

Let's say the phone costs $675 including tax.

With the rand/dollar exchange at the moment it will cost R5.530 for an unlocked iPhone 4S in the states.

I have just returned from 5 weeks in Australia and managed to secure a iPhone4s. But when I went to collect and realized that I was only getting Siri, a faster processor and improved camera I changed my mind at the point of purchase.
Siri would not help me much, I am happy with the speed of my iPhone4, and the improved camera becomes very expressive.
The prices is Australia at the Apple Stores are:
Aus$799 16GB
Aus$899 32GB
Aus$999 64GB
At an exchange rate of R8.20 (then) to the dollar the 32Gb wold cost R7371.80. (Less about 9% for GST reclaim)

So I have decided to hang on for the iPhone5 which will follow as a proper upgrade. With Samsung Galaxy S2 enjoying the success and the overall gains of the Android phones romping home in the USA, I am sure we will not have to wait too far into 2012 for the iPhone5 to appear. (Rumour has it that Steve Jobs was involved with it's development before he passed away)
BTW. The sales of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is still being blocked in Australia by Apple.
I saw on the news in Aus that a Govt Minister has called for an enquiry into the pricing structure of Apple in Australia. He wants Apple to charge the same rates for Apps, Music,Movies and hardware as they do in the USA. In Australia Apple charges a 10% premium on all services. Maybe that's a way to start reeling in Apple?

So they block the competition - then charge a premium for the content they can receive?
And more than likely - limit the apps that Australia can buy?

Great business practice actually - sell millions to those 'i' fans, force the rest to buy 'i's and rip them off at the same time. No wonder Apple is was worth more than XON!

While they are at it, how about the US$2 surcharge Amazon charges per item on e-books sold outside the US? Since the minimum price an author can change for their e-books is $2.99, that works out to a lot more than 10%.
