iPhone 4S Pricing

I apologise upfront if this has been posted already.
I was surprised to note the price of the iPhone 4S range in the USA :

The price of the 16Gig model in this country exceeds R7000. I understand that import / customs duties play a role, but to more than triple the price is shocking.

Got my 4S from the states and final cost was R6800 for the 32GB

Do you know how the price was made up ?
The 32 gig is advertised @ 299 USD.
Or can it be that Apple have had a major price drop ?

If you click on BUY IPHONE, then it takes you to another screen. The price of 199/299/399 USD applies to selecting one of 3 US networks. If you take one wide of these networks, the price rises considerably.

This is South Africa............everyone is too expensive here.

This iPhone is like affordable in the states, but double the price in south africa.
