Hello all,

Really hope this doesn't degenerate into a iPhone bashing thread - this is a sincere request!

I am a very happy iPhone 4S user.
But I would be the first to say that I am by no means a heavy-user of the iPhone, in terms of making calls.
The occasional call to the wife or friends during the day, but I mostly consume data etc.

The wife, on the other hand, makes extensive use of her Blackberry for business purposes.
Email and sms to an extent, the calendar / diary / contacts feature - but mostly she spends the time on the phone to clients. Or her immediate family (she has a huge, close family - and the are almost always chatting on the phone)...

She doesn't really surf that much - but then again, I never did either on my Blackberry, and when it becomes so much easier to do, like on an iPhone, one tends to start doing it more regularly.

With all of this being said - not a day goes by that she doesn't threaten to kill her Blackberry. It's one of the top Bold models - but with it's regular use etc. - it is now prone to switching itself off without a moment's warning - it's always trying to install some update via the useless App world thingy - in short, barring it being easy to type on, it doesn't really bring much to the party anymore. [As an aside - the wife takes plenty of pics of the little ones - really would benefit from a decent camera on the phone as well]...

So - she's due an upgrade. She knows I am very happy with mine, and I've maybe had to restart my phone 3 times since I've had it... Battery life is decent. Camera is excellent. And she now has an iPad 1. All in all - it would appear to make sense for her to get the iPhone 5...

BUT I am slightly concerned - no point in my recommending the iPhone for all the nice extras it has, if it drops the ball on the phonecall side of things. I have heard others complain about the 4S dropping calls. It sometimes happens to me - but in fairness, I sit in an office inside a very old building, with very thick walls - so reception is usually to blame. As mentioned, I don't phone enough to know if this is an issue...

What are the thoughts of iPhone 5 users who make plenty of phone-calls? Is dropping calls a problem - any more so than previous phones? Would you recommend an iPhone to someone who primarily uses it as a phone, i.e. to make calls?

Any opinions from ACTUAL users will be much appreciated!

Haven't dropped a call yet.

I had/have the 3G/4 and now have a Note 2. Imo iPhones call quality is terrible.

Would call dropping not be part due to the networks? The network in Grahamstown for Vodacom is absolutely terrible! Dropping calls on my s3 when I live almost next to the tower

Ja - certainly plays a part, I would guess... I know my wife has had issues with her BB, she runs on MTN. Did a few searches yesterday - came across a few forums suggesting that the iPhone5 has a better antenna than the 4/4S - so hope this is something of the past...

Thanks Bwana - do you phone often?
A fair amount. I get free minutes when people call me so those conversations tend to be longer. :D

and who do you phone? :p
[-]your mother[/-] no one in particular. :p

I had the 3G and the 5 is a big improvement on that. Perhaps the longer form factor comes into play there?

That's what I was wondering as well.... What I know about antennas is the square root of nothing, but figured the larger size of the phone, and the materials used, would surely make the entire unit more "receptive"? All sorts of assumptions in there, so who knows...

In my younger days out on the farm, they connected the CB antenna to the top of the packing shed roof... The techie said the corrugated sheeting would act like one big receiver - not so sure about that, since figured that would require the individual sheets to be in contact with each other all the way across the roof, but then I was farming, not radio engineering - so what do I know :P

area with bad reception, iphone 4 dropped calls regularly, not happened with iphone 5 so far

Only calls that have been dropped on my 5 have been when I was talking to my wife on her iPhone 4 with a 1998 standard sim cut to micro size. So I'd blame it on the sim.

Good to hear. Thanks for all the replies, peeps. Making things much clearer.
